Carnivore Restaurant...Hip or Hype???

I've read a lot about Carnivore. Sounds like a great visual experience for our group of first time Nairobi visitors. But I also don't want to break their wallets! I keep reading posts that say "expensive" and "very expensive". But I have also read on a couple of sites that there is a Ksh 1,700 / $20usd set menu available. I tried going to the Carnivore website, but no prices are listed....which makes me worried. These are co-workers we are traveling with and we are all stretching our budgets just to do this safari.

What do you say all of you experienced travel foodies out there? Firstly, what is the actual price? Secondly, for the spectacle is it recommended for a group of first timers?

Thank you all!

I'm not sure what the "spectacle" is in Carnivore any more? I haven't been for many years, when they used to serve game meat like zebra, hartebeest, impala etc, which were brought round on skewers and carved onto your plate. Then I could see the appeal, as it was something that would be hard to find anywhere else. I understand there is no longer game meat on offer and therefore it's basically just a restaurant that serves meat on big skewers. Without the game meat it's really just like a Brazilian Churrascaria, and we have those in London.

I've no idea how expensive it is but I can't really see the appeal now there's no game meat.

I went to Carnivore a couple of years back. It is okay, not great, not bad. Like said above it is meat on skewers.

Chicken wings were very nice and they did have meats that plenty people have not tried such as Crocodile and Ostrich. It is more of you can say you have been these days rather than the exotic place it was years back.

The price is not overly expensive from my memory.

Carnivore is an interesting dining experience, if you fancy meat cooked on real charcoal. They also have a ala carte menu. The Carvery costs about $40 for all you can eat, which I think is pretty good value for money.

On the ala carte menu, there's option for choosing meat platters.

It certainly is not what it once was - no game meat these days. However, it can be a fun evening choosing their pre-fixe menu. More than enough to eat and the price is still good when compared to what you'd pay in ATL or most anywhere else in the States for 'dinner.' But don't expect 'haut cuisine.'

If the weather is nice, sit outside (they do have warmers to keep any possible chill away). There had been a few similar type eateries in the States, but I prefer the Carnivore in NBO for the original atmosphere. And do try their Dawa drink.

Carnivore is a great experience for a first timer to Kenya, but has become expensive. We used to go all the time, but do find that the Dawa's are now closer to $8 each, and the wines expensive. Nairobi in the past 5 years has had an explosion of really good restaurants. Have a look at www.eatout.co.ke for more ideas.
