Nairobi airport this week-- long layover

We are currently in Tanzania and fly through Nairobi this Thursday. We have a 7.5 hour layover at JKIA (4-11:30 pm). In light of recent events (more the airport fire than the attack), we are wondering what to do during the layover. The airport (we flew through there two weeks ago) is very barebones right now with little place to sleep or eat. I think that even the airport lounges aren't open.

We can afford to rent a cheap room at the Airport View Plaza Hotel or the like. Or we can have dinner at a nearby-ish restaurant. What do you think about hanging out and having dinner in a nice hotel without booking a room? Would the Hilton or the Serena mind us using the lobby, bar, restaurant for a few hours if we don't have a reservation to stay there? What would you do? And how much would a taxi be to one of those hotels?

Thanks in advance!

Without going to the city you can go to Ole Sereni, The Boma or Eka hotels for your dinner, all of them have restaurants/bars and you do not need to take a room. All are on Mombasa road before you reach Nyayo Stadium roundabout and major jams. Ole Sereni is nearest, they have a nice terrace overlooking the Nairobi National Park, very pleasant.

I would not imagine that a taxi fair would be more that Kshs 1,000 (Usd 12) each way. Do remember though that you would need a transit visa at USD 20 per person, you will be through with immigration by 5-5.30 pm and will need to be back by 9-9.30 pm to make sure you are through security check and immigration in good time.

I'd agree with Larissa. The closer you are to the airport, the less time you will spend in traffic, especially before the first roundabout - Nyayo Stadium. If you land at 4.00 pm, you should be through immigration at the latest by 5.00 pm, if not earlier.

An alternative would be a safari through Nairobi National Park, exit by 7.00 pm and the dinner.

thank you! I am going to book spa treatments for us at The Boma and then we will have a quick dinner before returning to the airport. Perfect in advance of two long flights home.

Taxi drivers will indeed accept USD. Ksh are always preferred, but dollars will work fine.
