The Stanley Hotel

We are staying at this hotel on our first night before going on safari and am booked in on bed and breakfast. As we will be arriving around midday we will need to dine in one of the restaurants. Does anyone have any idea on what the foods like and a general cost??

Hi - they have 4 restaurants inside the hotel. Thai Chi Restaurant, The Thorn Tree Café, The Exchange Bar & Pool Deck Restaurant. For a 3 course meal ,expect to pay $30-40

The Stanley is right smack in the middle of town. There's is the Trattoria for italian food which is a few mins walk. Some Fast food joints like Steers, Pizza Inn nearby.

Also Java and Dormans coffee shops nearby where the food is decent.

I have to agree with the Java House suggestion. If you like coffee, I'd say this is some of the best coffee in Nairobi. (especially their lattes!) Plus the menu is quite good - the food is fresh and tastes really good. It's not as inexpensive as I expected it to be (or I expected Nairobi to be in general) but still good!

If you need a reliable, safe and friendly driver/tour guide I can also recommend one. (http://nairobispecialists.com/) My husband and I have hired Martin Maina lots, and we love him. (so did our kids :)

Hope you have a great trip and safari!!

I have eaten there before (on the night before safari too) but in all honesty my memory is not what it should be :-(

Last year my hubby wasn't feeling well when we arrived so didn't eat ate the restaurant in hotel or elsewhere but vaguely remember from the previous visit the food was reasonable and reasonably priced. Breakfast is buffet style with fruit, pastries & cakes and all the other usual suspects for breakfast

The Hilton is across the road from the Stanley. The pizzas there are very good.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I'm travelling with a teenager so maybe not the coffee shops, or she'll be up all night :-) I'm glad to see that so many of you have suggested going out of the hotel as I wasn't sure about doing this, safety wise. We will definately be venturing out now.

You will be fine in the city centre, just do not try to look so nervous when walking the streets. There is always a lot of people around so very rare anyone gets a problem around the Stanley/Hilton areas.

Walking distance is Tratorria as Stef has suggested. It is an old school Italian restaurant, that has been in Nairobi for more then 20 (30?) years. Great food.
