yellow fever vaccination

HI we are a family of four travelling to Kenya on vacation from India. After the Kenyan part of our holiday, we pan to fly to Seychelles for a few days and then return to India.

I understand that while we dont need a yellow fever certificate to enter Nairobi, we do need one to go to Seychelles after Nairobi and also to re enter India.

Strangely, there seems to be no stock/supply of the yellow fever vaccine in India anywhere. So we are wondering, as a last resort, if we could get vaccinated upon arrival in Nairobi? Can anyone please advise us if that is possible and where it can be done? Also approx costs?

Thanks a lot.

I can address a few of the points you have raised. We live in Bangalore. The vaccine is in short supply, according to the govt official. He also confided that they keep some as backup for emergency cases and for those who are about to leave.

They need to see your passports and tickets. You could show them your tickets as proof, and they may relent.

The minimum period needed for the vaccine to get effective is about ten (10) days, so you will need to take the jabs at least ten days before leaving India.

Indian airport immigration officials will ask you for the YF vaccination certificate. They asked us on April 9.

The cost per person is Rs 260.

Strange for certain - the YF inoc is required of citizens of India to have on re-entry to the country, but no supply to provide the inoc?

Also seems strange as there are many visitors from India to East Africa and this is the first time I've read of India requiring proof of YF inoc for re-enty....

but you will definitely require YF inoc for entry to SEZ from East Africa.

As above, inoc should be given 10/days prior your travel.

Can't say whether hospitals in Nairobi have supply of this inoc, where, costs... and/or do you have the time to research this on arrival?

You're going to have to do a bit more investigation on your end;

are there any travel clinics?

affiliated with a teaching hospital?

a tropical diseases specialist?

These are some of the resources we use in the States.

Here's my story: I pleaded with the official, told him Junior has final exams so we need the YF vaccine early in case of side effects. He was a kind man! Asked to see our ticket proofs. We got the jab in early March, one month before our travel.

He also told me that they have some emergency stock for people who are going to travel very soon and show proof of travel (passports and tickets).

They try to push it as close to travel date as possible because of short supply. The vaccine is produced in Russia and final processing happens in a North Indian city. Only Govt clinics have access to the vaccine.

We were asked for the YF certificates during departure and arrival immigration checks in Mumbai recently.

SS1969, did you show your passports and tickets, and do some pleading with the Health Dept official?

Jyoti, thank you so much for your response. Are you referring to the PHI in KR circle in Bangalore?

We will follow your advice. First plead here in Chennai in King's institute and Port Health Orgn showing proof of travel tickets etc. If that doesnt work, we shall try the same approach for the PHI in Bangalore. It says to call on a Monday for a Wednesday vaccine. I guess we should call on Monday and then just travel to Blore on a Wednesday to plead and try our luck?? What do you think? We are scheduled to travel on 21st May.

Sandi, thanks for the response too. Yes, we shall try other sources.

Hi,

According to the Indian Government's rules, you may not be asked for the certificate on your return to India if you spend more than 6 days in the Seychelles, not that that is any good to you as you will need it to get into the Seychelles anyway.

If all else fails you can get the vaccinations in Kenya see:

www.nairobihospital.org/section.asp?ID=55

…aku.edu/nairobi/ourservices/Pages/AKUHN_Ser…

I know that some countries (for example Thailand) will insist that you have the vaccination on arrival at the airport if you do not have the certificate. I don't know if the Seychelles is one of these countries

Hi - I can also confirm that on my return from Kenya to Bangalore, at Nairobi airport & was for YF cert -

Im a resident of the UK but currently working in India, so I had read up on what was required. On entry to Kenya was fine, but as your also aware its the return journey - I was not asked at Mumbai or Bangalore for any proof - My own UK YF cert had run out, so required a new one - as you say in Bangalore it was not an easy task - however after some phone calls to find who had stock, I managed to get mine at Yashomati Hospital, no appointment was required & it is done anyday - The cost however was more expensive than the 260 rupees quoted as above. \so from my experience it would be feasible to get the YF in Kenya - As 4Sandi as suggested it will be worthwhile researching on the net for clinics in kenya.

Shamba 25, thanks for the Yashomati hospital lead. However same story: no stock. Will keep trying.

I line with Doffcocker's advice, i have written to Nairobi hospital for details on the YF vaccine and to see if we can do it there.

Thanks for everyone's help. Fingers crossed, we shd get lucky with the Indian stock soon....else Nairobi, here we come!!

SS:

Yes, the Public Health Institute in Bangalore is next to the Mech Engg block of U V College of Engg at K R Circle. You need go at 11 AM on any Monday to make the appointment, with proof of travel. I was prepared to drag my other half over and for all of us to shed a few tears, but that was not needed, fortunately. The injections are given on Wednesdays, at 11 AM.

Here is what happened at the airports:

Mumbai departure - airline check-in staff asked us about YF, I said we have them, he said ok, did not check. Immigration person asked us, I said we have them, he did not check the certs.

Nairobi arrival - no questions.

Nairobi departure - YF certs checked at check-in counter and immigration.

Mumbai arrival - YF certs checked at immigration.

Best wishes,

Jyoti

Jyoti

I would like to contact you separately so as to not burden the forum with many of what may be my specific queries.

Would it be possible for you to share your mail id with me ?

Thanks
