Safe area of Nairobi?

My husband and I are visiting Kenya this month and I was wondering if a certain area of Nairobi is safe to visit. My husbands parents lived in Nairobi and my husband would like to see where his mother grew up and where his parents lived. We know the house and apartment are no longer there but we would like to see the area. The roads are Ngong Road (we have the name Adams Arcade?) and Riara Road. I apolgize if this is a silly question but we have been told that we shouldn't go to the area where his grandparents are buried as it is unsafe so I want to check about this area. Please note we are not staying in the area, just want to go look.

Thank you very much for any assistance you can offer.

I have been around these places myself without ever having a problem. I am a white British guy. You are fine is most parts of Nairobi during daylight, it is more at night where you need to take precautions. You could ask a local to escort you and give him a bit pocket money at the end of the day.

Ngong Rd and Adams arcade area is fine.

Thank you very much Mallamombasa, my father in law has not been back since the 80s and was concerned the area had changed. I am white as well but my husband is brown.

Nairobi got really bad in the 90s from what i have learnt and been told but it has improved greatly the last 10 years. Make sure you use a taxi at night though if leaving the city centre.

Hi, Riara Road is in a reasonably upmarket area of Nairobi, close to Ngong Road an to a large shopping centre (Junction). There would be no problems at all visiting this area during the day. Adams Arcade is an older shopping centre, a couple of miles towards city centre (from Junction). The coffee shop there used to be very popular with expats. It is also fine during the day.

We used to do our shopping in both areas (before we moved from Nairobi). I never felt unsafe.

You bet it changed since the 80's :) I moved to Mombasa in 2007 and I do not recognise Nairobi where I lived nearly all my life! As it was said earlier, Riara Road and Adams Arcade area are safe and are good areas, Adams Arcade is not a wonderful shopping centre but further up you have Junction - nice, modern, lots of shops, cafes, restaurants - nice place.

If you are going around after dark do use a car or a taxi, do not walk around, otherwise Nairobi is fine.

I live in Kilimani,Nairobi so I visit the Junction Shopping Center nearly every day. It is very safe both during the day and at night. However,I would also agree that you should take a taxi home at night. You won't believe how good the shopping is at Nakumatt Junction. They seem to have everything you could imagine.

I agree - there should be no problem visiting Adams Arcade (along Ngong Rd) in the daytime. However, be warned, the traffic can be horrendous. Make sure you go out of the rush hour!

Where are you staying? I hope not too far away! If it is not yet fixed, Ndemi Place is not far from where you want to go.

Very safe area indeed. There's a java Coffee House outlet inside Adam's Arcade. And heaps of Short / Long Term Lease Apartment blocks along Ngong Road.

Absolutely nothing to worry about...

Ngong road, riara road, Adams Arcade and the Junction mall areas a safe during daytime, I would say take necessary precautions when dark approaches like taking a taxi. I do not recommend walking at night.
