driving time to lake nakuru

Hi,

We're ending a safari at Lake Nakuru and then driving back to Nairobi. We want to head straight to the airport and go to Lamu and the flight leaves at 13:15. So, basically how long is the drive from Lake Nakuru to Nairobi? Will we make our flight or should we stay an extra night in Nairobi (we're starting and ending our Kenya journey in Nairobi so it's not like we need the extra night for siteseeing or anything)

Hi Hansika, we were in Kenya last summer, we flew everywhere except the Lake Nakuru leg of the Safari - and I have to say that it took alot longer than we thought as the roads were very bad, on the way up to Lake Nakuru from Nairobi it took us nearly 4 1/2 hours (incl a small break) and nearly 4 hours on the way back. But things could well have changed in the 12 months since we were there as there was alot of work going on to improve the roads, so maybe someone who has done the journey recently would be better equipped to make an assessment of journey times.

I beg to differ with ebenezer. Which road were you using as a short cut from lake Nakuru?

Now for Hasinka, The road from Nakuru is among thee best roads in Kenya as of NOW. The French contractor in charge on not repairing BUT building the road afresh is just about done. I drove on the same road two weeks ago at night and did 2 hrs flat from Nairobi to Nakuru.

What you need to do is to establish the lodge you will be spending at L. Nakuru. If you will be at the L. Nakuru lodge or Sarova lion hill, it will be easier if you exit using the Nderit gate which leads directly to the Nakuru/Nairobi highway thus cutting down on the wasted time used when passing through Nakuru town.

The best option would be to have an early morning game drive en route as you leave the park.If you are at the park exit by 9pm, 2hrs 30min should be sufficient.

There exists also another option, of taking a flight from the airstrip at the L Nakuru nat park but you will have to confirm the flight availability and departure dates prior.

All in all, the road from Nakuru to Nairobi could never have been any better.

Thanks.

Hi Hansika,

I was on safari in Kenya/Tanzania last month and we drove from Nairobi to Lake Nakuru. It took us 2hrs and 30 minutes (having had a stop at Great Rift Valley view point). The road is newly done and a very fine drive all the way. You are likely to doze off.....within a shortly while you are there.

Since you have a fliht to catch I recommend that you leave Lake Nakuru Park at 8am so you don't have to chance in case there were any traffik jams to the airport. I noticed Nairobi traffik Jam can be nasty!

Thanks,

Roberts

More on the drive from Nakuru,

There is a sure way to avoid all the traffic in Nairobi. Approximately 20 km from Nairobi city is a small town called Kikuyu. You drive through this town and through the leafy suburbs of Karen directly into Langata road which pours directly to the Wilson airport. The idea here is to avoid the Nairobi traffic and also this route is much shorter with virtually no traffic ever.
