ATM's & Cash on Safari??

Read the ATM issues and fact should not carry much cash. We are doing an 10 day safari, kenya and ending in Arusha Tanzania so tipping etc. will be involved when we cross the border. How much US$ do you think we should carry and will we be able to get more in Arusha. If eating in restaurants etc. should we have the local currency or will US $ be OK?

I'm assuming Can. $ are not accepted.

You will find ATMs in the larger cities, but small villages--definately not.

I would recommend taking ample US Dollars with you if you are not going to be around a larger city for a number of days.

You will also be hard-pressed to find a bank to take travellers cheques. There are many fraudulent traveller's cheques out there, so banks will almost never take them. I found out the hard way.

Some restaurants in larger centres will take credit cards sometimes (just remember to inform your credit card company of your travel plans so you do not get denied when comes time to use it in Africa).

That is correct, Canadian dollars mean nothing to the Kenyan and Tanzanian vendors/people. All it means is a bunch of hassle for them to try to exchange it at a bank. Accepted currencies are: US Dollars or the local shilling.

You may want to check with your safari company and learn where the ATMs are located on your route--if any.

hope that helps a bit

karibu (welcome in kiswahili) to east africa!

atms' are not reliable even in nairobi these days; american dollars are ur best bet (and keep money in 2 places incase wallet is stolen)

you will need to change into local currency as most restaurants will not accept dollars..

you can use credit cards in nairobi though - make sure they don't swipe twice!

tipping at restaurants - no hard and fast rule; approx 10% of your bill is good enough...

change money at bureaus and not banks or hotels - they rip you off!

enjoy!
