Mosquitoes, heat and weather conditions for early December?

Hoping for a trip to Nairobi for the first week of December '09. How bad are the mosquitoes and heat during that time of year? I live in southern Louisiana, USA. We have very humid, high 90's heat in the summer and two types of mosquitoes.....the tiny ones, that are so small they can fit through the screen door's holes......and the big ones, that just open the screen door and fly right in. Which kind does Nairobi have? :)

Whenever it's wet, which is usual in early December, more flying things. One good thing, if in NBO, which is at 5,000' rarely are there any mossies as it's too high and too cold for them.

If on safari, and it rains, rarely is it humid once the rain stops. In fact the wet settles the dust. But mossies do abound. Whether the "noseeum" as you describe the little ones, or the regular mossies. You always have to remember long pants, sleeves and socks between dusk-dawn when they bite, use repellent on exposed skin. Spray your room/tent before going out for dinner (not over your bed linens), use mossie nets if provided.

Some safari destinations are also at 5,000' or higher, but I prefer not to take chances.

And don't forget your malaria meds... though if only NBO, many don't bother with these. Your decision.

--We are also planning for Dec. of 09 to Kenya. Do you have to have yellow fever shots before you go and what about the malaria pills.? Do you just get them in case or take them all the time you are there and before? Any other immunizaions shots necessary?- Christy

We're going early Dec 07 and have been advised to have Yellow Fever jabs. As for malaria tabs, we've been advised of Malarone which you take 1-2 days before you go and a week after you get back.

Irene,

Are you only going to be in Nairobi? It rarely gets very hot in Nairobi.

----Are there any side effects from the yellow fever shots that we need to be aware of? We are pretty healthy but hate taking something I am not sure of. Thanks--Christy

How funny to find so many hoping to go to Nairobi the first week of Dec 09! We are definetly people who like to be well informed! We're hoping to go as well. Yellow fever vaccination proof is required . Your local health department should be able to provide the shot as well as anti malaria meds. Our health dept charges $85 for the vaccine and the side effects are the same as a regular flu shot. Muscle soreness in injection area, possible slight fever, just over all not great for a day or so.

Yellow fever is not required if you're coming from a non-endemic area. It's also not required to re-enter the US/UK if you've been to Kenya. However, it may be required if you're continuing on to other countries in Africa, Asia or elsewhere (you have to check the specific countries) within so many days of having been in Kenya.

Can you tell me an official place to find that statement about not needing yellow fever vaccine? Because this is all I could find on the Travel.gov website

ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required. Visas should be obtained in advance, although airport visas are available. Travelers who opt to obtain an airport visa should expect delays upon arrival. There is a fee for the visa, whether obtained in advance or at the airport. Evidence of yellow fever immunization may be requested.
