Warm/waterproof jacket for kenya safari in late May?

We are travelling to Kenya to start east African tour in late may and taking in Tanzania and Malawi. Confused by clothing recommendations- are taking fleeces but will this be enough in evenings and on early morning game drives? Don't want to spend money unnecessarily, can anyone advise please?

A fleece combined with a flannel shirt should be enough at the elevations of the big game parks. But the highlands down there require more. May is late autumn in that part of the world, which is far enough from the equator to have marked seasonal variations.

By down there I mean southern Tanzania and Malawi, more than Kenya.

Layers layers layers - especially for early mornings and evenings/nights. Just peel off a layer as the daytime temps rise which is often by 9am thru to about 5pm - often in the mid-70s maylbe even low 80s. You'll be inside a vehicle rather than walking outdoors, so a fleece with maybe a therma (or long-sleeve t-shirt) beneath should be sufficient. I also pack a scarf, gloves and knit cap as if can be a tad windy during those cool hours, besides none of these take up much room when packing.

Both for Kenya and Tanzania, though can't comment on Malawi.
