787 dreamliner planes for Kenyan flights from Gatwick

If have just been looking at Thomson flights to Kenya in November and have noticed that from 4th November that they will be operating the 787 dreamliner on the Gatwick/Mombasa route. At last the old first choice planes can now enjoy a happy retirement

"At last the old first choice planes can now enjoy a happy retirement" If they are over 20 years old they will probably end up being sold to an African country and kept in the air.

Might have to give them a try as a change from KLM, looks a super machine.

Is the flight time any shorter?

It says it travels at 0.85 Mach, over 600 mph so you'd think it should cut the time but the flight schedule says. 9 hours.

Great news Bruce, just hope now all passes over peacefully in March and their plans remain the same, still annoyed that Thomson withdrew the Manchester to Mombasa Flight, it was ideal for all travelling from Scotland & North of England !!

The flight won't be any shorter but will be much more comfortable. 34" pitch in economy, 38" in PE. More overhead rack storage, lower cabin altitude, much better air quality & bigger windows with "mood" lighting. The 787 is also much quieter because of a huge decrease in noise from the air flow.

Overall this will make for a much more comfortable journey, so it will certainly seem shorter. However, the catering won't be any better!!

Let's hope that they don't experience too many into service "bugs". Several other airlines have been having quite a few teething problems.

Mary, Thomson weren't filling the seats. You know what it's like getting those Scots & Tykes to part with their money!! :-)

I flew from Nairobi to LHR by Ethiopian in November and was amazed to find myself on the Dreamliner for the NBO-ADD leg!

There are always a few teething problems with the introduction of a new a/c into service. All aircraft daily suffer from technical problems. Apart from the issue with the lithium batteries, this is going to be a great a/c.

BA also start to take delivery this year & will be publishing their route info in the Spring. Fingers x for LHR-NBO.

can you imagine the wait now for visas and baggage at mbsa airport , flight time may be the same but i would add another 4 to 5 hours on that waiting to clear imigration and the return flight would be even worse

PJDUK, I think that you're confusing your aircraft types. The 787 carries less passengers than either the 767 or 777. Maybe you're thinking about the AB380?
