Hi folks,

I'm looking for some advice. We are considering booking the Classic Kenya 7 night safari through Hayes and Jarvis in August this year.

Itinerary - Nairobi - Mount Kenya - Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara - Amboseli - Nairobi

The one thing that we are apprehensive about is the amount of time spent actually travelling between destinations. I think we worked it out as

about 34 hours in total travelling in a 4x4. We are also concerned that the actual time at each destination may not be long enough.

We are thinking that a better alternative may be to go on a shorter safari where you fly directly to your destination such as a 3/4 night safari based on the Masai Mara.

Can anyone offer some advice please?

Thanks

Gary

Well, if you do a driving safari, you are on the road quite a bit, but you do have the advantage of having the same guide/vehicle throughout. You are absolutely, covering too much ground in only 7/days.

Based on the above locations, there are flights between Nairobi/Mt. Kenya (Nanyuki); Nairobi/Ambosei; and Nairobi/Masai Mara. Closest airstrip to Lake Nakuru is at Lake Naivasha.

If you want to avoid drives, then you have to fly. This adds to your cost and once at particular lodge/camp use the services of their guides/vehicles for game drives and other activities. If you wish your own private guide, there is a daily fee which can be quite high.

Traveling in August and if only 7/days, suggest visiting two parks only - Samburu (with ellees and unique species) and Masai Mara minimum 3/nts (migration) and 1/day Nairobi to take in the sightseeing, especially the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Center.

Day 1 - Arv. NBO - sightseeing: Blixen Museum, Giraffe Center, Sheldrick Ellee orphanage - o/n

Day 2 - Fly Samburu - o/n 2/nts

Day 4 - Fly to Masai Mara - o/n 3/nts

Day 7 - Fly to NBO for homebound flight

Gary,

The H&J Classic safari is one of their most popular to Kenya basically because it is with the leading brand in Kenya ( Serena) that said however you can always change the schedule I believe either fly to Masai Mara and Amboseli and drive to Nakuru and mount Kenya which are fairly near Nairobi. However you could also contact Serena directly am told they can offer you a full customised package to Kenya. You could also contact a local tour operator in Kenya and they will organise something like that.

For 7 days I would do Masai Mara then fly to Samburu and then fly to Mount Kenya and Back to Nairobi . Or if you are sure contact the hotel for accommodation then go to the local airlines ( airkenya.com and safarilink.com and book your connecting flights).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help.

After much debating I think we are going to opt for the following itinerary:

Flights between each destination:

2 nights at Tortillis in Amboseli

2 nights at Samburu Intrepids

2 nights at Kicheche Masai Mara

Finish off the holiday with 6 nights at Hemingways
