As you can imagine, there are several threads on this topic running at the moment. The consensus is (rightly I think) “safe” but, for your own peace of mind, you might find in useful to search through this and the other Egypt Forums for the spectrum of opinion. Also, December is a while away and, as recent event have shown, things can change at a moment’s notice. In short, you will have to keep an eye on events.

Hello there..

sadly what the media shows the whole world is different than reality, to get to the point Egypt is a very safe. and a few political issues going on is normal after the revolution but the whole country is stable and moving forward.

especially for tourists since Egyptians have deep hospitality traditions. and being a foreigner in Egypt people would love to help you out in all sorts of ways.

what might be annoying the greedy gift shop owners and all those who make living out of tourism. which i believe is normal everywhere, buy what you want and bargain :)

so no need to worry, and enjoy your vacation to the max, and the places you are going are beautiful. still there are alot of places u should consider going to, historical places and etc.

and if there are any other questions u wanna ask i will help you out.

Ahmed A, I have just read that the police are just back in force on the streets of Egypt - although there are doubts about training and effectiveness. Are tourist police properly back too? This seems like a step forward.

Regarding safety, I disagree that the media generally presents Egypt unfairly. They report riots and revolutions when they happen, just as they do in other famous cities. Women (and decent men) all over the world have been outraged by the sexual assault on French journalist Sona Dridi. This happened on Friday night - just a few days ago. She was filming live and you see the men crowd in on her LIVE on camera. It is repulsive to watch the faces of men looking on. Even worse is that she is just one of several female journalists attacked by men in Egypt. The media didn't invent these attacks. It simply recorded them.

Many people do not believe Egypt is safe for women, especially from sexual harassment. Egyptian women were attacked and molested in Tahrir Square simply for protesting about how safe Egypt is for women. What is sad is how badly this hurts tourism in Egypt as I have read many comments saying that people shouldn't go there. I happen to think that things are getting better but blanket assurances of safety don't convince tourists when they can see with their own eyes women being attacked. Instead of blaming the media, Egyptians would be better off pushing laws forward to make sexual harrassment a crime in Egypt and punishing those guilty men for abusing women.
