So, for the first time I have to do south america by car (well a vanactually). This is to help a friend with a book she wants to do on amusic movement of the nueva cancion (which by the way if you knowanything on la nueva cancion, I would greatly appreciate all thehelp). We'll be there for over a year and we'll need a van to live in havesome equipment in and so on, and we thought to buy this van or truckthere because of prices (any suggestions would be good here). My question is this, what do you know aboutthe purchase, registration and all that paperwork of a vehicle insouth america? I have two passports, one french and one american, butonly an american driver's license, is it really necessary to get somekind of an international license?Well, there you go, if you can help me I would love it, if not maybeyou can pass this mail on to someone else for me.Thank you and enjoy your travels wherever you are at the moment.LegReg Report as inappropriate |

Hi elflaco, im Luis from Uruguay. Well, I dont usderstand why many times from Europe or USA think in southamerica as only one country or kind of living, imagine that only Brasil is about 15 times more big than Europe... About what you ask it depends, where do you want to buy the van, all countries have differente laws. Perhaps you must know first of all where van are cheapper, and then ask about laws. In usa embassy they have web page about requeriments of uruguay about driving, perhaps in France embassy they have others, but remenber, all countries may have differents requerements and laws, ask first in embassy. Mail my if need something if come to Uruguay, and the best in your trip !!! Luis. Report as inappropriate

Hi, I have just returned from a short driving holiday in Uruguay so I won't be able to help you with all your questions but maybe some. You may need to be aware that South America is made up of several different countries - and they all have their own rules and regulations. We found the petrol expensive in Uruguay, the roads that we travelled on were in excellent condition and there were a few toll roads to consider too. I would suggest an international drivers license - if you do have an accident it is best to er to the side of caution. I imagine car prices are probably quite reasonable in Uruguay - probably because of the cost of petrol. However, if cars are cheaper to purchase and register in Argentina, it isn't far in the ferry to bring a car across the river. I wish you much love and happiness and I am sure you will enjoy your adventures in Uruguay and all the other countries you may find yourself in. Report as inappropriate
