Could you please tell me more about the following places to visit. I will be either driving a rental car or hire a taxi starting out from a Spa Hotel on the Dead Sea.
1) Machaerus, Mukawir. I have read that there is not that much to see in terms of structures but that it can be an atmospheric place scenically and in the context of its history. From Madaba it is supposed to be about 35 min drive. Is this the only way for me, even if I start out from a Dead Sea Spa hotel? Is its location and car park clearly posted? I have seen photos of the hill on which it sits with a long cut along the hillside. Is this the path/road to the top? From older posts I read it should take about 30-40 min uphill in full sun, which seems optimistic looking at the photographs? One total time estimate for visiting it was about 90 min. Anyone been there recently and remember how long they hiked up and spent there? What did you think - still worthwhile? How much time would it take to get from Mukawir to the places below?
2) Lot's cave and museum. Is the museum open? Well sign posted?
3) I saw a photo of a Canyon with the comment, "on the way to Lot's cave was a Canyon with a thin creek of water running through and a lodged rock between the canyon walls, the size of a motor home." Nothing else. Does anyone know which canyon this is and directions to it? For photo, please see: travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/…tpod.html. How long a hike do you estimate it will be to walk to the lodged rock from the car park?
If you have some information on any or all of these places to help me plan a route, thank you very much.
