Why is everything closed in Tel Aviv tonight (7-April, 2013)

I couldn't find a single restaurant or store open this evening around 7pm in the Neve Tzedek area. I know that tomorrow (8-April) is a national holiday, but does anyone know why everything is shut down tonight?

Businesses will mostly be open tomorrow as usual but not all. You can picnic and you can go to Old Jaffa. Some galleries may be closed but then again maybe not. No need to change your plans.

Note that there will be a country wide siren at 10 a.m. when everything comes to a standstill and out of respect I would suggest visitors to do the same.

Shuffaluff - thank you for the detailed explanation. We planned this trip to be after Passover, realizing that much would be closed during that time - but failed to realize that there were 3 additional holidays on 8, 15 and 16-April. We'll be in a small moshav during the 15th and 16th, and there aren't many stores, and no restaurants there, so we probably won't be impacted on those dates.

Based on your answer, we'll do the Carmel Market tomorrow. Thanks for the warning about the sirens and what to expect tomorrow - somebody without any knowledge of that could really get freaked-out!

Just to add, next week - April 15th is the national Memorial day for fallen soldiers. Memorial day actually begins at April 14th at 8pm, with a 1-minute siren, that brings the nation to a standstill (pretty much like Shuffaluff described at Holocaust memorial day). On Memorial day itself (April 15th) the siren will blast again for 2 minutes at 11am, during which ceremonies are held throughout the country. (again, a country-wide stand-still). That same day (but actaully a new day according to Hebrew calendar) - April 15th at 8pm, independence day begins. Celebrations and fireworks will take place at all cities.
