Tel Aviv and around

Hello Friends,

I am looking for advice on traveling in and around Tel Aviv.

We are coming there for 5 days in June. My husband is busy for the 1st 3 days leaving my 10 yr old and myself to explore the region. So, what can and should my kid and I do on the 3 days we are on our own? We will be based in Tel Aviv during our entire time since that is where my husband will be working out of during our visit.

We HAVE to do Dead Sea and most imp. sites of Jerusalem with my husband on his 2 days off- those are his absolute MUSTS. Also, what MUST we do during the 2 days with my husband and how do we go around?

Thanks!

Maya

P.S:We will be on a tight budget. Will we manage on our own or do we need to book through tour companies?

I suggest making an appointment to the children's museum in Holon (see their website for more information). You can also go to the Coca Cola factory which has two visitors centers, one is the regular center with the other being the a recycling fun place for kids. You can take him to the Tahana (Station) in Neve Zedek to 'ride' on the train which is fun for all ages. It's actually a stationary train which has a film inside and moves. Will you have access to a car? If yes go to see the turtles at Nahal Alexander.

It is possible to take guided tours through several operators, but they generally do not cater to kids and I would not recommend taking such tours in your particular circumstance.

How wonderful of you to take the time to write Chana! Thank you!

I checked Holon Museum and that does seem like a great option. Thanks for that advice.

My kid loves history as much as us so we aren't really looking for just children's activities. We want to use our time to learn about the culture and history of the region. Any more suggestions?

No we won't have a car. We will bus it :)

Many thanks!

Look at the City of Tel-Aviv tourism web site; it has a lot of information and gives the addresses and hours of the tourist information offices:

http://visit-tlv.com/

Note these two pages:

1. The city offers five free walking tours every week:

visit-tlv.com/…

2. and has a discount package for attractions, restaurants, stores, etc:

iandm.co.il/Campaign/…city_Pass.pdf

There is also a lot of information in the monthy "Time Out" magazine, Tel-Aviv edition:

http://digital.timeout.co.il/english/

One of the highlights in Tel-Aviv is the old "Bauhaus" neighbourhood, centered mainly along Rothschild Blvd. The city offers a free tour every Saturday morning (see above) but if that day is not convenient you have two choices:

1. A guided tour or audioguides offered by the Bauhaus Center on Dizengoff St:

http://www.bauhaus-center.com/tours.html

2. A self-guided tour:

http://www.white-city.co.il/english/index.htm

Click on [Tourism] and print out the brochure for each street.

The second major attraction in Tel-Aviv is the old city of Jaffa. The main sites to see are:

- the old port

- the Old City, above the port (churches, artist studios, etc). There is a Visitors Center in the main square.

- the clock tower square (Yefet Street), to the east of the Old City

- the flea market, on the east side of Yefet Street.

This web site gives a good summary:

igoogledisrael.com/2012/…

The major museums in Tel-Aviv are:

- Jewish Diaspora Museum:

http://www.bh.org.il/visitors-center.aspx

- Palmach Museum (must be booked in advance):

info.palmach.org.il/show_item.asp…

- Rabin Center:

rabincenter.org.il/Web/En/Museum/Default.aspx

- Eretz Israel Museum:

http://www.eretzmuseum.org.il/e/

- Tel-Aviv Museum of Art:

http://www.tamuseum.com/

There are many more smaller museums (e.g. Independence Hall, Ben-Gurion House, Rubin Art Museum, etc). You can see a list here:

http://ilmuseums.com/

Markets:

There are three big outdoor markets in Tel-Aviv:

- Jaffa Flea Market (see above) - daily, except Saturday.

- Nachlat-Binyamin Arts&Crafts Fair - every Tuesday and Friday.

www.nachlat-binyamin.com/en-Default.aspx

- Carmel Market (food, clothing, housewares, etc) - daily, except Saturday.

Entertainment and restaurants:

There are two sites that have been developed as entertainment areas with many restaurants, pubs, clubs, etc:

-Tel-Aviv port, in north Tel-Aviv (not to be confused with the Jaffa Port):

http://www.namal.co.il/en/default.aspx

- HaTahana (the restored Old Turkish train station) in Neve Zedek:

Another interesting site is the Ayalon Institute - an underground bullet factory of the pre-State era. You can get there easily by public transportation - take the train from Tel Aviv to Rechovot - it's a 10 minute walk from the train station. You do need to make a reservation and make sure it is for an English time slot.

I wanted to add my ideas but you got and a plenty already. The Ayalon institute is highly recommended and getting there, as Oreets wrote is easy. Have fun.

You already have great Tel Aviv days. I hope you are going to make it to Jerusalem for at least one day. Once in Israel, not to be in Jerusalem.....

8. Re: Tel Aviv and around

Take a train from Tel Aviv to the ancient port city of Akko (Acre).

www.tiuli.com/track_info.asp…

Attractions for your kid (and you...):

- train ride (sit on left of sea views)

- ancient underground crusader complex

- fishing boats

- old jail including a gallows (kids love stuff like that)

- market

- eat Hummus at Sa'id (open until around 14:00)

9. Re: Tel Aviv and around

I have put together a document of activities that appeal to children and teens in Israel. It is based on my own experiences with bringing my own children and teens and now bringing small groups of teens. I would be happy to send it to you but it is far too long to attach to tripadvisor. If you send me a private message with your personal email, I will send it to you.
