My 8 year old wants to hike Massada during our trip in January. He's hiked in Arizona...And he wants to take the Snake Path.
Is it doable for him>
Yes it is. When is your trip? If your trip is in July-August make sure you do in early in the morning and carry plenty of water with you.
There is no problem for him to hike the Snake Path. It is not an exceptionally difficult hike - the name originates from the serpentine route the path takes. It is on an incline up, the entire way, but is not dangerous. It's a matter of simply "keep on going" many stairs and twists, but he'll do just fine.
I took my 9 year old up there and he did great! It was during August when its just a little more difficult.
The comment about water is great but I would like to add to it...
Prepare by drinking sufficient water the day before! It is easier to stay hydrated if you begin the hike already hydrated.
If he is used to hiking, then go for it. Carry extra water for him and be sure he drinks at least 1.5 liters while walking up. It's also important for you and everyone in your party to wear a hat (helps decrease evaporation from the head and thus lessen the possiblity of dehydration).
Thanks for all your inputs, he's really excited about it. We're hiking up for our older son's bar mitzvah
It will be a very special day and the hike up will only add to the day's experience.
Somewhere you January hike got switched to a summer hike. In the winter while you do need to drink you will not be sweating the same way you do in the summer!
Lots of kids do it. They usually do it better than a lot of the adults walking up. The walk down is easy. Enjoy your special day.
