Transport from Selcuk to Istanbul

Hi,

From Lonely Planet guide, it mentioned that there is a popular train-boat combination route from Selcuk to Istanbul. This involves taking a train from Selcuk to Bandarma, then a ferry service to Istanbul. I had the following queries and appreciate if someone can provide me the information.

1) Is there a website I can refer to on the schedules for the train travel from Selcuk to Bandarma and also the ferry scehdules from Bandarma to Istanbul ?

2) How long will the travel from Selcuk to Istanbul be for this train-boat combination ? I do understand that if I were to travel by bus from Selcuk to Istanbul, it will take me 11 hrs which is rather too long for me.

3) I will be travelling during end July. Do I need to book the train and ferry tickets in advance ?

Regards,

Yew

2) The train/boat combo will take just as long if not longer than bus only.

3) No

If you are hard pressed for time the easiest would be to fly direct from Izmir to Istanbul.

If you are not then you could look at the train/bus/ferry options on offer.

Above are good suggestions. Train ride is a good way around.

Boat is great due to good views. Take this option if you have time for sure

I also recommend the train + ferry if you are keen railway enthusiasts. But it doesn't work very well just now. At present the first train leaving Selcuk is at 06.49, arriving BASMANE Station in Izmir at 08.20. Unfortunately, the train for Bandirma departs from the other Izmir station, ALSANCAK at 08.20!

If you take the 11.28 departure from Selcuk, arriving Basmane at 12.40, you have time for lunch in Izmir before finding your way across to Alsancak Station for the 14.15 departure to Bandirma.

The train follows the old line though some very scenic hills, well away from the modern roads. I very much enjoyed it, back in 2010. But I was in no hurry to get to Istanbul.

The 14.15 departure gets you to Bandirma in time for the 21.30 ferry departure. The ferry takes 2 hours, so you would arrive in Istanbul close to midnight. Not what you want, I guess.

Bandirma is a sadly unattractive place to spend a night. Better would be to stay in a hotel near Alsancak Station and catch the 08.20 morning train out of Izmir.

The flight with Atlas Jet is highly recommended. One-way fares for mid-July are still below 100 TL, and that includes a free bus service from Selcuk to the airport.

Excellent source of great information, and I really appreciate your input, ResmeN & RobertL. This is the last leg of the Westward segment of escorting my 83-year old mother on a 2-month overseas odyssey in which Istanbul is the hinge. After re-arriving in Turkey (Chiso-Cesme), then overnighting in Selcuk, we will spend the day touring the fabled Ephesus before catching the train to Istanbul. I have gone half-mad attempting to buy tix on the state site--I should have read TA first! Anyway, I am thinking to take the train from Selcuk to Izmir (with ample time to make the connection), and catch a sleeper train to Istanbul. I've already reserved 26JUN in Selcuk, take night train to Istanbul, where I've already reserved 30JUN at the Sultan Hostel. What do you think? Any additional information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi. I'm afraid I would not recommend the train for you. When I took it - some years ago - I travelled into Izmir the day before, just to buy the ticket! Even the railway station at Selcuk could not provide the "combination ticket" that included the ferry from Bandirma.

I don't think there is a comfortable overnight train Izmir - Istanbul, and much of the line approaching Istanbul may still be disrupted by engineering works.

I suggest the Atlas Jet flight, which has a free bus service from the state hospital in Selcuk town. It's a really excellent service.

Thank you, RobertL--Sounds like so many transport situations around the World, including the USA. Since we will be entering Turkey at Cesme, we'll stop by the Izmir station to make inquiries/book train, if possible. Thanks again!--John Eyberg aka Juanito Hayburg aka BIKERJOHN

P.S.: Private Guide to Turkey, what is your opinion?

Chios - Çeşme is a great way to enter Turkey. My favourite route, I would say.

BTW I recommend Eleni's place Topakas House near Chios Town.

Bear in mind there are two railway stations in Izmir, as I mentioned above. Alsancak is quite a nice area to stay if you do get an option on the train to Istanbul.

I suggest you ask on the Istanbul forum about trains into the city.

I don't think I can comment on "Private Guides". I suppose a good one could increase your enjoyment tenfold? Just not my kind of thing.

Thank you, Robert. I appreciate your comments. This is why I use TA religiously--lots of different opinions & suggestions. Of course, that is the interesting part of traveling; "You never know until you go!"
