What is your price point for a hotel as there are hundreds of options. I can't offer testimony as we have booked for this spring but here is the group:

Was hoping not to spend more than $200/night on a hotel. Just 3 of us going.

I've used Viator before, though in Italy. Thanks for the reminder!

I found Hotel Amira through TA. Excellent-excellent reviews and right down the street from Blue Mosque in the thick of it.

You can use public transportation, and you do not need a guide. I think that the Rick Steves' Istanbul is excellent. It includes walking tours in different areas of the city and how to get to major sites.

You don't need a tour guide. The Suhltanmet district is very small and walkable from the Sultanahment district.

It is quite easy to find your way around walking or by public transport. People are nice. The transit system works great. It's a great city. But you also may want to consider whether you want to stay in the new city or the old city. Most of the big sites are in Sultanahmet so it would be easy to find them from a hotel there

also the DK Eyewitness Istanbul is a good choice to use

Aykut Ayik was a wonderful guide in Istanbul. He speaks fluent English and is extremely knowledgeable of Turkish history. We were part of an all day private tour for ten people arranged by one of the passengers on our ship that cost us USD68 each. He was prompt in meeting us at the arranged time just outside the cruise passenger terminal and enthusiastic to begin our full day tour. He also arranged for us to stop for a quick lunch where we had some typical Turkish foods and enjoyed the culture. The tour was arranged through Tours by Locals but he has an email address that is aykutayik@yahoo.com. If you need a local private tour....he's the one to contact...you'll have a great time.
