Taking Young family to East coast Arugam and up - Plausible? |
|
We are off to Sri Lanka in December and after a couple of nights in or around colombo (any suggesstion on reasonable hotels with a bit of history and a pool - warmly received!) we are off to Unawatuna for a week. However we then plan on heading to Arugam as we are looking to give some money to an area which needs help with a school Project and it appears Arugam was pretty badly hit - however I am a little concerned as there was a granade attack 20kms up the coast and given who won the election I am perhaps unnecessarilly concerned. The kids are pretty young 6, 2 and 4 months I also hear the road to Arugam is quite rough has anyone been there and can advise on the practicalities? Many thanks, Tom. Report as inappropriate |

Hi, Firstly, for the hotel you're looking for. I stay in low budget guest houses but if you visit www.infolanka.com on the left of the page you'll find a sub heading for tourism. There is a long list of hotels from Negombo all the way down the coast. Regarding Arugam bay. It was badly damaged and does need help but then so do many other places. I admire your wanting to help so I'm not being critical when suggesting that you can help in more easily accessible places. Arugam Bay is heading for the north eastern monsoon so is right out of season and quite probably getting plenty of rain in December. If you do go there, I'd advise hiring a car and driver for the trip as it's a long, sweaty, uncomfortable journey on the bus. Arugam is considered to be safe. Just to the north , especially around Baticaloa there's always grenade attacks and shootings going on. From Unawatuna it's easy to get a bus or train to Matara, then a bus to Dikwella, Nilwella or tangalle. On that stretch of coast there's plenty of places to stay, some great beaches for the kids and also plenty of people still needing help. Rod. Report as inappropriate

Hi, I would suggest the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo for your stay before raching out Unawatuna. Its a nice quite hotel with a history and their guesture is very warm and welcoming. Also, the situation seems quite and calm after the election here in Sri Lanka presently and the grenade attack in Batticaloa is an unfortunate event due to the election. But Batticaloa is a common place for this kind of incedents as we hear them almost every week. But I guess there is nothing to worry since you will be heading Arugam. I agree with Rod on his points of the travel to Arugam and I too suggest that you hire a car with a driver since you will be taking a family with young kids over there. Your guesture of contibuting towards the needy is very much appreciated by us and being a Sri Lankan I would like to thank you for your kind contribution. Good Luck! Treshi, Colombo, Sri Lanka. Baldedash: I am curious to hear about your trip. I hope to take my own kids (13 and 9) to Arugam bay in a few weeks. Please post a trip report. Thanks, Barbara bchen715@yahoo.com Report as inappropriate
