Mongolia on a shoe string budget

Hi,

I will be in Beijing from Oct 08 - Dec 08 on a volunteer program and have decided to visit Mongolia (UB) during the 1st / 2nd week of Dec for a 10 day period before coming back home.

I have checked out a few sites organising tours to Gobi and Terelj which are in the price range of 200 - 300 USD but it is way beyond my budget. Is there anyway a backpacker like me can explore Mongolia (I really want to see the Gobi desert and may be the Baikal lake but I know it will be frozen at that time) on a tight budget.

Also, need more info (abt the schedules and fares) on Trans- Mongolian railway from Beijing as I'm planning to take the train. Given my timeframe, would I be able to see the sigths and return back to Beijing in time ? I have to fly out on 24th Dec.

Thanks!

Sagar

Sagar,

Not many people get to this forum.

You might do better here: http://tinyurl.com/3uprxs

I'm assuming you realise it will be very cold!
