 Carol Cassidy, Laotian Weavers

One of the BEST and most worthwhile places to visit of cultural significance is the weaving business owned by American weaver, Carol Cassidy. In a small quiet village capital, there are few sites worth visiting. THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM!

Carol (who appears to remain in the background) began working in Vientiane in about 1993 with the UN and one year later, as a weaver herself, established a weaving center for Laos women to preserve this Latioan art. Her business is going strong with 50 women weaving directly on the premise. Visitors to the shop are welcomed to observe the weavers in action as well as purchase exquisite products.

It is located directly across the street from Monarch Books (an excellent bookstore!) Closed from 12-1400, visitors must ring the front door bell to get inside.

The old, worn but charming colonial house is also a shop where visitors can buy the gorgeous products produced on site.

Be warned prices are well beyond the budgets of most visitors to Vientiane. It would be nice if there were items on offer that would be "affordable" to the admirers of gorgeous Laotian weaving. It is clearly a business worth supporting.

for Kurashiki, Cambodia

Never been there, out of my price range. I just buy my silk at the market and have my Lao skirts made ($9 for tailoring).

I have had the pleasure of visiting quite a few weaving villages during my travels around laos, the most recently on a little island outside of Pakse. Still, the best selection and prices are at the markets...
