road conditions border crossing to Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam

Has anyone gone through the border crossing of n.e. Laos\n.w. Vietnam at Tay Trang lately? ie. since the large typhoon swept thru. n. Vietnam? We are hoping to do this route in the next couple of weeks. What are the road conditions like? Were the roads damaged by the typhoon? any landslides still blocking roads?

I understand that within Laos buses go from Udomxai to Muang Khua and then a smaller vehicle on to the border....? And from the border at Tay Trang there is transport to Dien Bien Phu and onwards by bus, in stages to SAPA.

Any info would be great, as we have to decide on which border post to enter Vietnam.

Ruadh,

This may be out of date or perhaps you've already come through but we've just gon over this border-crossing with no problems. The roads we're pretty hairy at times, more on the Viet side due to the driving style and surly atitudes of the drivers. You are correct about the bus stages, though we found oursleves in a minivan with 18 people in it from Sapa to Dien Bein so the term bus is quite relaxed! If you want to head straight to Sapa or even Hanoi then this is the best border.

Best of Luck

Dave
