Can you tell me how much you normally give as tips ?
Is it expected and do you give 10% or more ? Is it only for restaurants or everything ?
Thanks for your replies

I myself tip 20,000 VND or I don’t tip (let them think I’m dead stingy LOL) because anything below that is too little to tip in my opinion.
Giving too little can upset them like makes them feel they’re beggars.
That’s just me.
P.S. For taxi, I round up a few thousand VND to the nearest amount.
Thanks, that gives me an rough idea !
The only tipping we did was rounding up taxi fares and sometimes restaurant bills, leaving small change and food in the room and we tipped the railway porter in HCMC. No one seemed to expect a tip and no one got angry with us for not tipping them. Viet Nam isn't yet a tipping culture.
I thought that in upscale hotels and restaurants, tipping is more expected, especially in recent years, is that true?
I just go by the simple rule that good service deserves a tip and bad service does not.
We had an excellent driver who was safe, polite and all around lovely - he drove us around over 2 days for about 7 hours in total - we thought his service was excellent, so we tipped him 200,000 VDN. On the other hand, another driver was driving like a maniac and only cracked a smile at the end when he thought we might tip him. Not a chance - we stared him down until he gave us change, which he did VERY reluctantly.
In my opinion, don't feel obliged to tip when you don't think the quality of service warrants it - bad service should not be encouraged!
In my experience, a 10,000 VDN tip didn't seem too stingy. At a few restaurants we went to, the waiter/waitress appeared very appreciative for a 10,000 VDN tip. Same with cabs - we usually rounded up to the nearest 10,000, or added 10,000 as tip.
hahhahahaha... I am taking the fifth on this topic.
NTDAN....stay out of this topic...go pack and get ready for the trip, woman!!
I will see you in Mui Ne...if our date work out. Should we do lunch at Duxton? I will be in Saigon November 20 and 21th only. Look for a lady with fruits in her hand.
Yeah, let's meet, but not at the Duxton, we may be expected to tip! LOL
I'm sure there's some fruit stand we can meet at.
Vietnamese people expect tips but they don't show that.
Nt and Tee,
Enjoy your time in Vietnam. I thought 2 of you will meet up with StarwoodPlatinum for a lunch.
Thanks Land!
Yeah, I think Tib is going to buy Starwood some durians as a peace offering...and for Starwood, it would only come from the famous upscale, luxury fruit stand of course!
