 Gold In Phuket

Can anyone recommend a place to buy an 18kt gold chain in Phuket, we are staying in patong and am looking at buying a gold chain for my brother, the heavy type (my brother thinks he is a Rapper...lol) any advise on a reasonably priced place would be appreciated and a silly question is the start at a third of the asking price and end up somewhere in the middle apply?

Thanks

PS not an expert on gold prices but are gold prices in Phuket cheap??

I'm not sure if the price for gold jewellery is particularly cheap, but the way to go about it is to work out the price of gold per gram (roughly 1000 baht for 24k ? so 750 for 18k ? They can tell you at the shop), weigh the chain, multiply the grams by 750 baht (or whatever it is), add the workmanship cost(not much for a simple chain), and the profit margin (min 20 % ?), then go from there.

We went to the big Jewellery place all the tuk tuks take you to, but we also visited a smaller place that was very popular, near Phuket town I think, that was cheaper. Only bought silver stuff. Don't remember the name, but any tuk tuk driver will know it.

Tuk tuks and taxis will be more than happy to take you to any amount of jewellry stores. In fact don't mention you want him to take you to a jewellry store because if he do...He will take you to all of them...Unless you want to go to all of them that is..!!??..Introducing you to the store entitles him to petrol tickets...!!...

I can't help you with negotiating prices in the large jewellry stores as I have never bought anything in them....but do your gold homework before you leave...

Yes Hawk definately do your homework.

My daughter has rapper friends so you may have to measure the length & width of the chain your brother is looking for.

You could try Wangtalang Jewellers, if they have the width of gold chain you are after i'm sure they would make something up for you.

Bangkok had a some great Rapper style jewellery when we were there January.

Have fun looking around we were after a Rapper style watch for our daughters friend a couple of trips back & its amazing what you find when your on a mission. CJ

Hi Jellie,

Maybe I exageratted with the Rapper reference, i just want a Thickish Chain which hangs just below the neckline, i know wangtalang, but going there with my wife is like letting a kid loose in a toy store...she loses it!!!, but their prices are good.

Hawk,

Most gold sold in Asia is 24ct so very expensive, especially as you describe "the heavy type"

I would expect your budget would need to be in excess of AU$2000 for a heavy solid chain of a length to suit a male.

Suggest that you go into a bar and ask one of the girls. If they can't tell you, no one can.

I think that Thai's measure their gold by baht.

For example they may have a chain that is equivalent in weight to 3 baht.

Two things to bear in mind; 1 - the gold in Thailand is the orangey gold, typical of Asia, not sure if you like it.

Number 2 - anyone who takes you to a jewellery store will not only receive an immediate 100 baht for doing so, but commission on your purchase, so consider going on your own to pick up the commission for yourself.
