Hi everyone,

This is a question for the Aussies who travel to Thailand with Travelex Visa Cash Passport.

After reading on this forum and AWD that there appears to be alot of card fraud around - and after someone using our card on a UK website (the bank picked this up) I went down to the Travelex office and asked about the Travelex Visa Cash Passport. I am interested in using the Visa part of it to pay my hotel bill. The fellow said that you can only use the Visa function within Australia, when you leave Aus you can only use the ATM function.

Is this correct? I checked the Travelex Website and it doesn't say this so I am confused.

Any Aussies use the Visa function outside of Aus?

Louize

Hi Louize,

we have just got the card however we have not used it yet. I was under the impression that you could use it like an eftpos card - so I would imagine that as long as the hotel is using an online machine you should be able to use it.

cheers,

Cro4,

How long did it take for you to get the card after applying? We leave on 15NOV and I wonder if I leave it too much longer to make a decision it won't arrive in time.

Hi Louize,

I got mine through Australia Post. I had it organised in my 1/2 hour lunchtime. The cards are stored at the post office and issued immediately. Apparently they are activated with in 2 hours of being issued. It was a really simple process.

cheers,

cro4

Hi we have just purchased travelex for my daughter she goes to america on thursday from what we have been told by harvey world travel there are 2 types of cards first is used as a visa second is debit card we opted for debit card so she can use it at atm and also for purchases ( which to me sounds the same as a visa ) she has to sign the back of her card she is secondary card holder when making a purchase she still has to sign and show her signature. im not sure when withdrawing from atm if it is savings or credit she uses. it is very confusing as they say one thing the web site has different info i would be interested if anyone else has info as we will be taking the card when we go to phuket in october

Hi Lou & Paul,

We have a had a travelex cash Passport card for a couple of years and it has a Visa symbol in the corner but its not a Visa Card as such its a Debit card only. The card can be used in any ATM machine that displays the Visa symbol. The card has no numbers or names on it only a magnetic strip on the back and no area for a signature.

We have used the card in ATM's in Brisbane, Bali, Singapore, and Phuket and as i said we just withdraw cash from the card when we need it. It has a transaction fee of around $3.50 AUD each transaction and i think you will find that this is cheaper than using you bank ATM card.

I hope this helps Louize.

Cheers, Pete.

Hi

Don't know much about the travelex cards but I have recently got a Wizard Clear Advantage Mastercard to use on my upcoming trip to Thailand in November. This card doesn't attract any ATM fees or foreign exchange conversion fees. An added bonus is that there is no annual fee for card either. You can use it to withdraw money from ATMs but you need to place funds on the card before you go (from that side it's similar to the Travelex card,). The mastercard part of it works as a normal credit card (which im not planning to use due to the well known credit card fraud previously discussed on this forum).

Just remember that if you plan to use a debit visa/mastercard card that if your card is ever compromised the money the thieves are using is yours and not the credit card company's. A friend of mine had his credit union visa debit card scammed and it took months before he received his money back from the credit union/Visa.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Jane
