Pahurat market / Little India |
Love Indian textiles/decorations/food and was thinking about visiting this market on my upcoming trip. Has anyone shopped here? Is it pushy or can you shop in peace? Is it open in the evenings (when I get back from my tours)? How do prices compare? Any thoughts would be great. Thanks. |
Also, is it walking distance from Khao San Road?
The only thing i can answer out of that is its definetely NOT walking distance from KS road !
These are my favourite markets. Definately not pushy! Most prices are so cheap and I never really need to bargain. Open around 10 ish but not sure what time they close. I presume about 6 like all the other street markets. Walk in through the back and you will find heaps of cottons and silks.

Thanks for the info! Do I have to taxi from Khao San?.... It is in/near Chinatown, right?
Yeap. Taxi from Ks. But dont use a taxi to and fro Khaosarn road at 5-7 p.m. Most taxi's will not run by the metre. It's peak traffic hour at those times!
It is not exactly near chinatown but you can walk to china town from little india
It'd be quite a long walk though princess..!
Tuk Tuk ride might be not over than 50 baht.

This is also one of my favourite markets - I love cloth! You will find all sorts of cloth - not just Indian textiles - also lots of buttons, etc. On the outside of the market you will find a lot of shops selling wedding type bits and pieces too. Fabric is very cheap and an astounding range. The sellers are not pushy at all but it does get very very crowded and the alleys are tight so be prepared to struggle through. If you get a taxi say you want Prahurat Market (Indian Market ) - its opposite a shopping centre called Old Siam, and a branch of Central Store. You need to go into the market through one of the small alleys. Also across the road at the eastern end of the markets is the entrance to Sempeng Lane which is also really interesting and has heaps more fabric button shops etc in the early part - particularly fine cotton shirting. Also very very crowded but in the last 18 months has been repaved and roofed so is much easier to negotiate. I try to go in the morning about 10 when its still quiet and not too hot. I think they only stay open until early evening - its not a night market.

Yes it will be a long walk. But at the same time, you can buy drinks on the way, fresh fruit, and snack as you walk. And there are lots of shops to look at while you walk
