Hi,

I am planning on going to Thailand in either June/July or September. Which months would be better to go?

We are either going to book the trip as a package deal, or just book the flights and then do all the hotel bookings ourselves.

We are planning on going between 2 to 3 weeks, and are looking for a mixture of relaxing and some partying.

We also want to go to some less touristy areas in Thailand, but are only looking at going to the coast.

The following are places I have in mind:

Bangkok

Ko Pha Ngan

Ko Samui

Phuket

Ko Phi Phi

Ko Lanta.

As you can see, our planning is still in the early stages, and any suggestions will be welcome.

Also could someone tell me the most effective way of travelling between areas? Also which order should we visit the ares? Also how many nights would you recommend in each place?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions

June/July would be my suggestion. September usually has more rain.

Bangkok-Phuket - fly one of the LCCs: Air Asia, Nok Air.

Ferry to Phi Phi from Phuket

Bangkok-Samui - either fly Bangkok Airways directly or Air Asia to Surat Thani then ferry over.

I read that Thai Air is going to start flying 2 flights a day from Bangkok to Ko Samui.

Go any-time you can, there'll be good deals to be had in the quiet season you mention.

Don't go to so many different beaches/islands.

A beach is a beach is an Island with a beach... same same.

Sit still and relax once you leave Bangkok, or take a week between beaches/Islands to visit the north is my advice.

If you're planning to SHOP... it might be prudent to leave it until that day or two in Bangkok before you depart Thailand.

Up to you :-)

Hi,

I did a trip that covered those areas last year, and am about to embark on another one. You are more than welcome to have a look at my travelblog for some ideas. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions, I am busy looking at your blog!

It will be our first time in Thailand, and as we are coming from South Africa, we do want to try and see different parts of Thailand, rather than just stay in one place. which areas would you not go to if you had to cut some places out?

Thanks again

I think if I was you I would try see Chiang Mai... I would only do one area of Islands (either Ko Samui, Ko Phangan OR Ko Phi Phi and Phuket) .. my preference would be the first option.. it just depends on how much time you have

I would also agree that you should consider Chiang Mai - it will add another dimension to your trip entirely. I spent 2 months in Thailand a few years ago and loved my time in Chiang Mai. You can take an overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai (one less night of a hotel to pay) which is pretty comfortable (for backpacking standards) and really inexpensive. There are also flights available, but more expensive and you don't have the benefit of 1 less hotel night. As far as the beaches go - you might also want to look into Krabi and the surrounding area. We found it fabulous, but this was before the tsunami so I'm not sure what its like anymore.
