Road to Kisoro from Buhoma

After our stay in Buhoma, we are going to be in Kisoro for 2 days to either do a volcano hike or golden monkey trek. How long should we plan on being in the car from Buhoma to Kisoro?

it is almost 5 hours drive from Buhoma to Kisoro. do not expect to stay in the car less than that time. it could even be more depending on the road.

Are you asking this in order to get to Kisoro fast to do other things or just don't want to be in the car 'all day?'

If you prefer being out then consider walking from Buhoma to either Nkuringo or even Lake Mutande where your car can pick you for the last bit into Kisoro.

The car can drive around the 170km while you spend the time walking through the forest on a clear trail of around 13km.

Mfuwe, we just don't want to spend the whole day in the car. But your options sounds great! I'll do a bit more research, but to make sure I'm on the right track, we can give our stuff to the driver, while we hike a 13 km trail from Buhoma to Nkuringo or Lake Mutande (approx how long do you think that hike would take?). And then we meet our driver and since this hike is on the way to Kisoro, we drive the last portion with him. How long will that last portion of the drive be, from Nkuringo to Kisoro? Also, is this trail pretty easy to follow or do we need a guide? Thank you!

Your car/driver will set you off and then take the luggage for you.

You walk the 13km to Nkuringo, or on down the Lake Mutande. our car will then drive around the Forest and meet you at the other end or wherever you agree.

The walk should take around 5 hours but depends on how many stops you take to see things. The last km or so to Nkuringo is quite steep as you climb out of the valley.

From there by car to Kisoro is less than one hour.

If you walk on to Lake Mutende, down hill 6km, Kisoro is only 30 minutes by car.

The trails are easy to follow but as you are walking in a Natonal Park you will need an escort/guide.

Here is the whole trek in detail and 'reverse'.

OK great! The only thing I'm confused on is DestJungle said it is a 5 hour drive from Buhoma to Kisoro (unless I read it wrong).

If hiking takes 5 hours, plus a 30 minute drive .... how can driving the whole way take 5 hours? Shouldn't it be much less, since we would be in a car?

Regardless, I like the idea of the hike, we will do that. I just want make sure I'm understanding the timing correctly.

Two different questions Movie chic.

You asked "How long by car from Buhoma to Kisoro".

Dest Jungle and I agree. 5 hours to cover teh 170km on bad roads. Note the 170km. Not a direct route.

To walk Nkuringo is 13km in a more or less straight line.

From there Kisoro is only a short 35km drive away.

So Buhoma to Kisoro is only 48km is a "straight" line north to south but 170km by road. Get the picture? Think huge Capital "D".

You walk the straight bit, the car drives around the curve.

Moviechic, you'll be smart to take Mf's suggestion to WALK the route.

The drive from Buhoma to Nkuring (about an hour 's drive on the turnoff from the road that would take you to Kisoro) took 6 hours. Rain the night before (not unusual in a rain forest!) had caused downed trees across the forest 'road" aka 16 inch deep mud path.

thank heaven for 4 wheel drive!

Next time, I'm walking!! And the folks (I met a few while staying at their lodge) at Nkuringo Walking Safaris are some of then nicest people you'll ever meet!
