 Gorilla View Lodge

Hello, I will be in Rwanda (PNV) in early June and was wondering if anyone has stayed at or heard anything about the Gorilla View Lodge? Any information would be appreciated. Also, Has anyone done the Golden Monkey Track and is it worth doing for a day?

Thank You

Hello Hoover67,

I wish I could help you more with Gorilla Mountain View Lodge, I have not yet stayed there, as you know it is just opened, the comment I have been hearing that might help you is that it is now considered the "best value" in the region. If you're on a budget have a look at the Kinigi Guest House.

I recommend the Golden Monkey trek if you have an extra day/morning, they are beautiful and endangered primates and have become quite habituated to humans making it possible to really observe them closely in their natural habitat instead of just seeing a golden streak flash by like in the past. The permit is $75 and it will be a good hike in beautiful surroundings and your support will really help this sometimes overlooked endangered primate. Good luck Hoover and enjoy Rwanda!

My husband and I stayed at the Mountain Gorillas View Lodge in February 2009.

Our lodge was very nice - it had opened just in January so the main dining area was still under construction. We ate in what will eventually be another guest room. It was clean and comfortable and while not luxurious, definitely a few details that made it special. We had a wood burning fireplace they helped to start a few times a day, they brought hot water bottles to place in the beds (we were there in February where the nights got very chilly and it rained every day so the added warmth was welcome!). The food was pretty good and the staff extremely nice and helpful. You will have a nice time.

I'd also suggest a visit to the Iby'iwacu Cultural Village Kinigi one afternoon you are there. No reservations needed, $20 per person and a truly memorable experience. It was about a 5 minute drive from the Mountain Gorillas View Lodge. Our guide knew about it but their website is www.rwandaecotours.com.

Have a great time!

Cheers trvlErin, thanks very much for the GMVL feedback! Great to hear from one of the first guests that the experience was a good one; and they have hot water bottles and a fire, little touches that go a long way, exciting!

And the village outing in Kinigi, awesome!!

We stayed at the Gorilla Mountain View Lodge for 3 nights this April! It's not officially opening until June 2009 but is ready for guests! Our large chalet was lovely! You will have no close neighbors because each chalet is on its own little path so it's very peaceful. The setting is picture perfect with the volcanoes in the background! Definitely lots of opportunity for pictures! The staff at this lodge were fantastic and we came away with new friends who we keep in touch with by email. If you decide to stay there say hello to "Good News" and Sandra from Marie & Dixie in Canada! The service was unbelievable! They can't do enough for you! Nice fire going when you get back from trekking & the hot water bottles at bedtime were a very welcome touch! Even down to a much-needed shoe/boot cleaning after gorilla trekking, which you're going to need (a small tip of a couple of bucks is greatly appreciated)! We didn't track the Golden Monkeys but were very fortunate to see them at the end of our second day of gorilla trekking. If you're lucky enough to have Francois Bigirimana as your gorilla guide please tell him hello from his crazy Canadian friends too! He's an amazing man who actually worked with Dian Fossey! Here's a man who truly loves the gorillas! If you're interested in visiting a small local school please go to Cathy Emmerson's! "Good News" and Sandra know her! She's an incredible former Canadian who is doing wonderful things for the children and community! Yes, she's another friend! Rwanda is an amazing country and I can't wait to go back! Let me know if you'd like to hear more about Rwanda! Can you tell I fell in love with this incredible place?
