Is it worth the massive visa fees to see Tunis for a day?

I will be on a cruise in April with a one day stop in Tunis. We have just been advised that the visa fee (for Australians) has jumped from $30 to $300 each (or $150 plus various costs if you apply before you leave home). What can you see in Tunis in a few hours? Is it worth our while to pay the big fees to leave the ship? Thanks, appreciate any wisdom on this.

I like Tunis, not a big city, in my opinion, i would not pay it, but then again is that not what cruses are about? Stopping off and visiting places. I can see your dilemma, i don't envy you :o(

EDIT see you are coming from Australia, it is a once in a life time thing, i would do it, even for a few hours. Take shed loads of photos and soak it all up, but i do see your point on this.

Its easy saying we would not do it, after all did say that, when we can get their in a few hours., but when you are coming from so far. IKt muddies the waters some what. Agree its way over the top

It begs the question

These Cruise operators charging the amounts quoted !!

.Over 200 GBP for a few hours visit?. Behave, guys

I could get a week all inclusive in Tunisia for around that amount.( i assume its AUD)

In fact, my next visit is 463. AUD and thats 2 wks all inclusive with flights .

I have tried to google this (visa charges)

Cant find a definitive on what should be charged.

But trust me, at that price i would rather stay on the boat and get drunk!

Cheaper !

This is visa costs though, not excursion costs?

Ok Joe

Even then

A lot of dough for a few hours or so onshore ,even if it did include a city tour and a feed.

However. if Sydney could clarify

How visa fees can increase in one jump by so much ?

Thanks for your input everyone. The fees are purely visa fee for entering Tunisia, and doesn't include the cost of any tour or transport. We were advised via Holland America that it was better to get the visa before we left home, as recently visitors had queued onshore until lunchtime to get the 'on-the-spot' visa. I contacted Tunisian embassy in Australia who sent the forms and said it was AU$30 whether we arranged visa now or bought it when we got off the ship. A couple of days later they contacted me to say fees had just been raised to AU$150 (plus costs of premium secure postage for passport to and from embassy, and extra passport photos) or AU$300 !!!! if you queued for visa at La Gourlette. I feel sorry for people who have already booked and paid for a shore excursion but not already arranged a visa. No explanation was given for the sudden increase. I don't know if it applies to visitors from other countries or just Australians!

It sounds ridiculous , do they want tourists to visit , or not ? It seems no !. Where else are you going on the cruise ? In my opinion there is nothing in Tunis worth seeing to justify that cost , tis fine to walk about etc but there are no major sites ( no Taj Mahal or historical sites as in Istanbul ) .
