Good 2/3 week South Africa tour?

Can anyone please recommend a 2/3 week organised tour of South Africa by a UK based company? I've seen Travelsphere, Riviera and Saga itineraries - can anyone give feedback on these or any other tour? Many thanks.

Hello, just a thought, why dont you organise it yourself. Unless you prefer going with a big group. But it is not difficult to do you own thing, so to speak.... there are many TA's who can give you advice about where to go and what to do.

Thanks for this. My experience is that on an organised tour you might see more because you're not negotiating arrangements or concerned about directions and transport. I'm also mildly concerned about security, which if we did a self drive tour might be an issue.

Hi baronio,

Many roads lead to Rome as they say.

You can plan and book yourself, which as Lyn mentioned is not that difficult to do, but will require research and time on your part or you can make use of an agent to tailor make a trip for you, according to what you want and your budget, and who will assist and advise you, handle all the bookings and payments on your behalf. You do not have to self-drive unless you wanted to and it is generally perfectly safe to do this as long as you use common sense which you would do in any foreign country, but can make use of road transfers and/or flights. My opinion, is that organised tours are normally a bit less flexible, and there may be a compromise on one or other aspect of the trip.

Regards.

Hello, well said Brett, there are always compromises, on a big tour, you may not have the flexibility you may desire. However, whilst you may not consider self drive an option for you, like trying to find the route and so on, there are small local operators that will provide escorted tours in small vehicles - they will book the entire trip and prepay all the expenses, then you have carte blanche to see and go where you want to. Just a suggestion..

Just to add driving in SA is like home from home only better with less traffic & roads going in all directions & more space & courtesy.

Just returned from a 19 day tour of SA with Titan. Their Best of SA tour. It was our first trip to SA tho our third Titan tour. We thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact would go so far as to say our best ever holiday. Very varied tour, excellent guide, outstanding game viewing. Yes it's busy and at times a bit of a whistle stop event but we got to see and do so much.

Less than 2 weeks ago me and my girlfriend started initial research on a 2-3 week last minute trip, to begin around 9th November (so 3 weeks!)

We spent around a week speaking to different travel agencies based here, Virgin, Kuoni, and also looked at some itineraries from SA-based companies like RhinoAfrica. However now it's looking like it's going to be cheaper to book it ourselves, and we are just about ready to (esp with a 3 day Virgin Atlantic sale ending today)

rhinoafrica.com/south-africa/kruger-national…

We have used something like this as a base, but are doing it backwards. Also used the invaluable help of these forums for the first time, so thanks again to everybody who posted in my thread.

For what it's worth, our trip is costing less than £4000 for the 2 of us for around 16 days, including all flights, accom, transfers, car hire etc as well as 2 nights each in Elephant Plains and Shendzela lodges.

Best of luck, hope you are doing it more in advance than us!

We always do our self drive itinerary via own research and book directly with our SA accommodators etc, though well in advance. Booking an African trip with Travel safaris companies here, gets us a 10 day safari trip for $6 -$8,000 AUD per person not including airfares. By doing it ourselves we get what we want ie a 21 day SA trip with care hire and accommodation (some luxury) for around $6,500 not including airfares. Each to their own but well done gals, more saved = longer trip more seen.
