2 Weeks In South Africa in Feb - Can You Recommend a Route? |
|
Hi All I'm hoping to use airmiles to get to SA with my girlfriend in Feb. My uncle who I''m visiting in Durban has said Cape Town and wine areas, then fly to Durban spend a couple of days there visiting and then head up to Kruger National Park for a safari and then back home via JoBurg. Sound good, if so how long in each place? How do we get from Durban to Kruger and from there to Joburg? By car? How long would it take? Anyone know a decent hotel in Cape Town and what wineries are good? Should we just take day tours? Wouldn't mind staying on a vinyard! Also is it safe? the GFs from the US and a bit paranoid! What are the essential security tips? Lots of questions but I hope some of you guys will be able to help... Cheers UKT |

We did a 2 week tour (Sabi Sands/Kruger/Blyde River Canyon, Victoria Falls and Cape Town)- but it differs from what you want to do- if you are interested, you can do a search for it- it is called: TRIP REPORT: 2 week- Kruger, Victoria Falls, and Cape Town
I wouldnt worry too much about safety- we had no issues...just use common sense.
In Cape Town, we stayed at the Westin in Cape Town- and did day trips to Table Mountain, etc... (see my report for details). We only did a day trip to the wineries from Cape Town- but perhaps you can look into staying in Franschhoek.

Search on 'Trip Report' - there are a few around. Also search on 'Safety' - it is a topic that has been addressed several times.

Word of advise: If you are planning to use miles, better book asap. I'm going in March and already had to ticket because preferred dates were sold out. Airlines offer very few seats on mileage award tickets.

Two weeks doesn't give you a lot of time to spread over three centres. Cape Town, you could spend weeks there and still not see everything but the highlights probably cable car up Table Mountain, trip to Robben Island, visit Cape Point and call in at Boulder Beach near Simonstown and see penguins. You can do a day trip to the winelands, suggest going through Stellenbosch, you could call at Spier Wine Estate, taste the wine and see the cheetahs. Carry on towards Franschoek and we always stop at Boschendal Wine Estate and buy one of their picnic hampers and eat it under the trees, then carry on to Franschoek. There are dozens of wine estates. I would probably recommend you stay in one of the hotels on the V & A Watefront, then you are central with lots of restaurants.Really depends on your interests but I would spend at least 4 days there. Fly to Durban - can't help, only been there once years ago. From there SAA do a direct flight to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near Nelspruit. Again wide choice of Private Game Reserves, which offer the best chance of seeing the best animals in a short space of time. They are all inclusive, game drives and meals but very expensive, £150 pppn upwards to astronomical prices. Alternatives are to try for National Park accommodation, self catering, in Rest Camps inside the Park and excellent value for money and very popular so get booked quickly, see www.sanparks.org for details. Finally you could stay in accommodation in somewhere like Hazyview and drive youself into Kruger each day. We enjoy doing that but the snag is you can't drive off-road, so you rely on the animals being within sight of the roads and you being able to spot them, which takes a while to become accustomed to. You could then fly from Kruger Mpumalanga Int. Airport to Joburg or drive back. A fairly easy drive, not particularly scenic. Takes about 5 hours. Safety - just act sensibly and you won't have any problems. Have been going for years, travelling independently, never had a problem.
