I just want to share some information my partner and I discovered while in Tangier regarding the "Private Tour Guides." And also ask the question, how much do you pay a 'private tour guide', and how do you know if they are genuine or not!?
Firstly, we arrived at our hotel Hotel Continental- which ended up being quite a nice hotel, reasonably priced, good location.
When we arrived we were greeted by a few men- who took our bags to reception, and one who also advised that he is a tour guide.
We were a bit unsure of this tour guide, as we had just arrived and had no idea what we were doing! So after we took our bags up, we asked the owner of the hotel about tours etc. and he advised that Hicham "Chap Chap" is "the best tour guide" in the city. So we decided to have him for the night, and for the day after to show us around Tangier- as we were unaware of what to do/see.
He showed us around the whole city, took us to the famous places to see, eat ,etc... as well as his 'uncles' rug/jewellery shop, where we were given some mint tea, taken to the top of the building to see the view, and a demonstration of all the rugs they make there. We were there for a good hour or so, and after this we went to the 'Spice Shop' - I believe most of these 'Private Tours' take you to these places. He also took us to the Ferry to buy our tickets back to Tarifa.
After this, we tried to pay him some money, however he said, later later later, so we waited until the evening as we asked him to take us out with a few friends we had met there- he did so, took us 'door to door'. In this time that night he arranged for us a taxi to take to the famous Hercules Cave, the small town Asilah, stopped off a few times to take pics of the beach and the camels. We at first were very hesitant to do this as we had no idea who this man was who was going to drive us around all day and he told us that we pay the taxi driver 60 euros for this (30 each).
We then paid Hicham "Chap Chap" 40 Euros for his guidance, as we thought we aren't going to see/use him again after this. When we said this, he said "a little more tip tomorrow when we see you for the taxi".
We saw him for the taxi, and that was it?
Has anyone experienced or knows of Hicham? I am just curious to know, as he did an excellent tour for us, but we just weren't sure as to how much to give him and was he actually genuine?
