Advice re: Marrakech & Fez -- Lots of Questions!!! |
|
Hello :) My fiance and I are getting married in November and headed out to Morocco for our honeymoon. We will be flying into Casablanca in mid November, and out of Marrakech. We have 5 1/2 days to explore. While we'd like this time to be relaxing, we'd like to make the most of the time we have too - Wanted to get your advice regarding where to go, what to do, where to eat, where to stay, and most importantly, HOW MANY DAYS to spend where... We were thinking of spending Tues (we arrive early morning in Casablanca), Wed, and half of Thurs in Fez/Rabbat, and flying to Marrakech on Thurs evening and spending Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Marrakech. Does this sound too ambitious? We've read about the Atlas mountains and would love to fit in a trip for that too somewhere amidst those 5 1/2 days. Any recommendations? Where should we fit it in? How much time should be allotted for that? Looking for some good tourguides also that will be willing to stay with us during the day time and take us around the cities, leaving the evenings for us to relax and enjoy on our own. Any recommendations regarding such tour guides, how to contact them, what sort of costs are associated with these tour guides? We're looking for tourguides that will really help us see Fez and Marrakech, not take us simply to galleries, but really into the Medina. We're thinking about staying at Riad Kniza.. but don't have any idea as to where to stay in Fez. Finally, whats the best mode of transport between Fez and Rabbat? Is staying in one of those cities doable, while exploring both? Can't wait to hear from all of you world travelers out there! S & A :) |

I agree with truebeliever - use Rabat to break up the journey between Casa and Fes, but concentrate on Fes. Your hotel/riad will be able to sort out a guide for you. As for accommodation in Fes, definitely stay in the medina. There are around 30 riads in Fes now, catering to different tastes and budgets. The Google directory is a good place to start. What is your budget and what kind of place/experience are you looking for?

Dear Truebeliever and Fassia, First off, let us thank the two of you to replying! We really appreciated it..... I've got a couple of questions still.... Do you have any advice as to the best mode of transport between Fez and Marrakech? I've looked into flights but they seem to only be in the early, early moring...We were hoping for something in the late evening so that I could keep the day to explore Fez.. are there local carriers that would provide such flights? Should we wait to book our flights in Morocco or beforehand? What are things we should not leave Fez and Marrakech w/o seeing? Any recs? Excited about the Medina and Mosques, architecture and such!!! Hope you're all doing well. S & A

Remember: it's your honeymoon!! What a great place to come and stay. Excellent choice in Riad Kniza (even has wireless internet...not that you'll spend much time on the internet)! Marrakech and Fes would be my recommendations. I live in Rabat and while I love the city if I was in Morocco on my honeymoon I think I would just concentrate on two cities--in fact I might just concentrate on one!!! Fes is great, Marrakech you'll love in the evening in the main square. You can take a train between the two, but it will be a long ride. There is a web site oncf.ma that covers the train schedule and all that between cities. Go first class on the train - it's not that much more expensive. My compliments for a great honeymoon idea. But don't try to do too much. Enjoy each other and the wonderful experience of being in Morocco!

Flying between Fes and Marrakech is not a good idea. Since all internal flights stop over in Casablanca, it will take almost as long as the train or hiring a driver. There are no domestic carriers other than Royal Air Maroc. I like the train - first class is comfortable and inexpensive. Alternatively, you could hire a driver to take you from one to the other, possibly stopping over in Rabat for the afternoon.
