Marrakesh at new year

6 of us in early-mid 30's, going to Marrakesh on boxing day for a week, want to be near the action, can anyone suggest an area and/or riad to stay in. Budget £50 pppn. Any suggestions for new year's eve? Thanks.

Moroccans don't usually celebrate New Year's Eve. The only parties are at hotels and restaurants, and most of them are tacky, expensive or both. Some riads do special New Year's arrangements, but these tend to be pretty expensive.

Also, this year New Year's Eve coincides with an Islamic festival, Eid el-Adha, where every Moroccan family that can afford it sacrifices a sheep and shares the meat with those who can not.

In my humble opinion, it's not a great period to visit Morocco. Especially not if you're relying on public transport. That is simply mayhem in the week before and after the festival. A bit like flying in the US around Thanksgiving.

I would really think again about spending New Year in Morocco this time around!
