Camel Trekking Tour,Night in Desert,Tour from Marrakech/Fes

Dear Friends,

My family and I are planing a Morocco desert trip, we are interesting in camel trekking tour starting from Marrakech..overnight in desert camp..sunset/rise..

On the google and TA search we foud a Moroccan excursions website(http://www.morocco-excursion.com/excursions.html ) that includes tours all over Morocco , but all the tours starting from Marrakech, Fes but for 3-6 days...

There's not desert in Marrakech or in 3 hours from Marrakech ? some friends told me you can ride the camel in Marrakech but when i contacted a lot of companies who organise camel tours, they offer 3-6 days tour included 1 night in desert.

Can someone help with more informations and advices ?

Thanks

You not need to be worried, it is safe to be there, no problem at all. It is very nice there so enjoy your stay, either in Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga.

Yes I think camel trekking for an hour and a half is about the right length of time. It’s long enough for you to initially get used to the camel (and for the camel get used to you), for you to completely relax and enjoy your desert journey and also about the right time to appreciate that you and the camel will be parting ways.

Trek for much longer than this (in one sitting) and the next morning you’ll certainly feel muscles that you’d forgotten you had.

There are ways in which you can make your camel trek more comfortable:

□ Travel at the right time – not when the sun is blazing or there’s a sandstorm or rain/thunderstorm brewing.

□ Wear comfortable clothing – loose fitting, longer shorts or trousers (for men and women). Remember sunhat/turban as protection from sand/sun, sunscreen, sunglasses. If you use contact lenses, substitute with glasses whilst camel trekking and in the desert.

□ Footwear – Depending on the weather, flip flops, open toe sandals/trainers/light closed toe footwear – you don’t need hiking boots, wear what you’re comfortable with. There are no stirrups so your feet simply hang free, dependent upon the weather take your footwear off tuck them under your saddle handlebar, ride barefoot and enjoy the ride.

□ Travel light – Carry as little as possible with you, ideally it should be just you, your camera and your camel . Make sure your pockets can be securely closed so that your money/camera can’t fall out (or use a camera strap). A bottle of water is handy, although your camel man should provide this. Check if your desert camp can take any other luggage you may want separately for you.

First impressions count. Be relaxed and introduce yourself, camels have feelings too you know.

You don’t mount a camel in the same way as you do a pony. He’ll be crouched on the ground with his legs folded under him as you approach, you swing one leg over his hump and sit onto the saddle grabbing hold of the ‘handlebar’ fixed at the saddle top. Your camel man should be standing by you and holding onto the camel whilst you make yourself comfortable. As the camel man lets go of his hold the camel lurches upwards (so hold tight to the handlebar) extending his backlegs first, meaning that you dip forward towards the camels head, very quickly he extends his forelegs, tipping you back a little, and then suddenly ‘you’re up’. (Some people express surprise at the height of the camel, roughly ‘a horse and a half high’). When you arrive at your destination, it’s a similar experience when the camel stops and you dismount.

Your camel trek should be a beautiful experience, if you become uncomfortable, your turban needs re-dressing, you want to stop to rest/take photos or admire the scenery let your camel man know, he’s there to help.
