Hi all,

We will be in Marrakech in just over a week staying in a Riad in the medina. Are there sign posts/directions in the souks/medina? i have heard of the different souk areas such as the leather/slipper etc but wondered whether these are sign posted or whether you just wander and stumble upon them!

Many thanks

There are some signs saying which souq you are in, but it's not signposted in a way that you could follow. Most guidebooks have reasonable maps to follow.

Smartphones (iPhone, Androids) have inbuilt mapping that works without a data connection. Even better offload the TripAdvisor Offline City Guide, see http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/apps-icityguides

Also check out openstreetmap.org/#map=17/…B000FTF and Google Maps.

It used to be the case in Marrakech that the various artisan souks were to be defined within a specific area. However those demarcations have largely disappeared. The Rough Guide provides some of the best descriptions and maps of the main souks within the medina. There are signs (Souk Semarine, Souk el Attarin and Souk el Kabir for example) but they are not always obvious. However just wandering about is as good a way as any of discovering them!

there are new [new since last year anyway] signboards in places around the souks. they give information about the history of each area - the wool-dyeing, berber pharmacies and so on. street names are not particularly helpful, in my opinion: i can't read arabic characters and they are not always in french.

just wander. getting a bit lost is part of the experience. though if you want lamps, tin objects or fabric a visit to the place de ferblantiers in the kasbah might be better than the souks.
