One day drive Marrakesh - Essaouira

Hello,

Looking for suggestions for a one-day drive between Marrakech (picking up hire car from the airport at around 10:30am) and Essaouira (arrive by 6/7pm latest).

- Berber villages?

- Places for lunch?

- Villages/Sights off the main road?

Cheers!

Not terribly much of great interest on this route, mainly upland scrub, but Chichauoa offers a half decent cafe/rest point. Frankly for all the time it takes head for Essaouira directly and have lunch there (if you are leaving at 10.30 you could be there by 2 pm at the latest. There are a couple of camel ranches en route and womens' argan products cooperatives too which are worth stopping at. Otherwise the scenery really only improves as you descend into the port and the ecology becomes maritime Mediterranean in nature.

Thanks Pilobolus2011.

We were thinking we could detour to maybe spend some time around the mountains etc. I know it's the wrong direction...!

No shortage of Berber villages. Genetically probably some 90% of the population of Morocco are either pure or part Berber. That includes the King, whose mother, Lalla Latifa, is from the Zayan tribe of Berbers.

Doable so long as you're up and about early. When you get to Imlil, fork left via a massive boulder and carry on up the road to the top of the Tizi n'Tamatert where there's brilliant views into the next valley.

When you return to Asni from Imlil, turn right instead of left, then after a couple of km, turn left and ascend to Moulay Brahim (great views and an interesting little town), then carry on across the Kik plateau, descending towards Lalla Takerkoust reservoir. In Lalla Takerkoust turn left, but have a detour to the right for a couple of hundred metres first to check out 'Follies de Fer' who is an innovative metal worker/artist.

Anyway, turn left and head towards your original route via Amiz'miz (pronounced Ams'mis)
