My Arabic is limited to basic conversation, asking questions and haggling. I did better than expected on my last trip. I didn't get a chance to see the storytellers 2 years ago. I will be in Marrakech for a longer stay this time. Can I hire someone to translate for me since I can't interrupt the storyteller or ask him to speak slowly? Maybe sit on the outskirts of the circle and have someone whisper the translation descretely?

Yes Dixon;

That's a good idea to show the ART of the Moroccan Culture and to save that heritage by the visitors.

Have fun and welcome to Morocco.

It would be wonderful if the big hotels would offer such entertainment to guests who like to stay in their air-conditioned suites during the heat of the day. You know the type of wealthy tourists who want to experience the "true Morocco" without dealing with locals.

Only 6 real storytellers? Not enough to pass on the tradition unless there is a demand for their services.

There is places for storytellers, like in Fes.

There is restaurants where they give such shows, but the square of Jemaa el Fna is the best entertainment.

I would be disappointed if the art of storytelling was replaced by cheap entertainment by phony actors like at Chez Ali.

Agree, sometimes you find some storytellers in the villages of some moussem, or some souk having a circle and that kind of people moving from place to another, because it's too much to find all the story tellers in one place " Jemaa El Fna" the best one has all the people, it's the ART of culture DixonTurnip, and visitors who could remain that by their support, to keep this culture and history survive.

But the Idea of bringing some storytellers to some of the riads is a great idea, there is a cultural people who likes that, and in my opinion it would be good if that happens in some place where people get dinner in some of the Authentic places like La Maison Arab, Dar Marjana,....

Hi there

It is almost impossible to see a storyteller perform anymore as most of them have died out. If you are very lucky you might be able to see Abderrahim el Makkouri who is one of the very last ones. I'm sure a young Moroccan student could help you translate otherwise try a tour guide. My book "The Last Storytellers" is available in hardback or kindle edition on Amazon.

We have a couple off storytellers in Taroudant. They are very popular and always have a big, exclusively male ,crowd, particularly on market days. Sometimes they act out part of their stories with props eg a pistol or hat,. and comedy routines or even, rarely, pair up with the musucians with whom they usually alternate. But they tell in Tashalet so even if my dirigi improves I'll not understand them.

Reply to Marrakech: Can you tell us something about you? Are you a native of Marrakech? Are you a student? Do you charge money for your services?
