shorts?

My wife and I are going on a coach tour of Morocco in a couple of weeks, a daft question but what about wearing shorts, are there any recommendations or restrictions other than in Mosques.

well said, david! i don't understand why people think it offensive to be reminded to dress appropriately. most people would not go round tescos in a string bikini. or along oxford street in a thong. so the idea of appropriate dress is not that shocking, surely?

Marrakech is a tourist city but dressing with respect to the culture is important. On my last trip I saw a very obese middle-aged woman getting off the bus in "short shorts" and a tube top--way too much skin showing! At the end of the day I saw her again, red as a beet with a sunburn, and humiliated by comments from locals. Go with loose, long and comfortable pants. Enjoy Morocco !!

Yes, Dixon, pants in cotton or linen. And when it's extremely hot, stay indoors.

I know I'm sticking my neck out here, but I think a lot of tourists, and expat residents too, need to be reminded that Morocco is an Islamic country. Most Moroccans identify as Muslim, whether or not they completely embrace the teachings of their religion.

With the new government, I have seen some changes recently regarding the requirements for obtaining residency. I hope they will come out with guidelines of appropriate dress for visitors to this country, to be handed to foreigners upon arrival. By that I do not mean a strict dress code, but suggestions for dressing with modesty, that will show respect for cultural sensibilities.

Interesting to read the range of opinion on this one, I think it shows that there is no clear answer that covers all situations in Morocco and everyone has their own view on what is acceptable.

Personally, I think it really does vary from place to place and also depends whether you are male or female - what is the norm in Taroudant is not necessarily the same as a coastal city like El Jadida.

For example no one is going to care if you are wearing shorts in summer in a popular beach spot like Agadir, likewise Marrakech is probably the most liberal city in Morocco so pretty much anything goes. Conversely, I have always found Fes (the Medina in particular) to be a lot more traditional and more conservative views will also be found as you head off the usual tourist trail or into rural areas.
