My wife and I are going on a coach tour of Morocco in a couple of weeks, a daft question but what about wearing shorts, are there any recommendations or restrictions other than in Mosques.

CW_1, if you come to Taroudant, you will see ME walking around in long pants in all kinds of weather, regardless of the heat. And long sleeves usually. Shorts I wear at home.
Edited: 6:59 am, March 22, 2013The question of shorts is one that divides even my Moroccan friends. The sight of French tourists wearing shorts in the Fez Medina arouses a cross between shame and laughter. As Tim has responded saying the "shorts things" is old... well it is still considered respectful in Fez not to wear shorts, though many tourists do. In rural Morocco things are vastly different from the city of Marrakech and Marrakech is different to Fez. In general, avoid shorts (particularly for women) - but if you do wear them be prepared for some Moroccans to look at you as though you were wearing underwear in public. In Fez we have a game called "spotting the first knees of Spring"- in which local photographers send us (The View from Fez) the first photos of French tourists wearing shorts in public!
Sandy, it's refreshing to hear from someone who thinks as I do.
Here in Taroudant I am often disgusted with some of the tourists I see, men as well as women. Showing cultural consideration doesn't seem to enter their heads!
The first knees of Spring? I see them wearing shorts in January when it's cold enough to be wearing coats.
I give them meaningful looks, but say nothing.
Edited: 5:37 am, March 23, 2013Don't Moroccan men wear shorts in either in Fez, at least in the "French" quarters or in Taroudant? None, never? No women in revealingly tight leggings? Not a single Moroccan short skirt? No women wagging their bums in jeans that are far too tight?
I mean, I'm really interested in this. Even if it's frowned on in these places, I can't believe that, in this day and age of mass communication that any Moroccan believes that shorts are underwear.
David, with the greatest of respect, do you give "meaningful looks" to female tourists (or immigrants) in the West who are completely veiled and covered, maybe with a gauze over their eyes? I mean, that's an affront to most people there who care about human rights and women not being oppressed - especially as their husbands are often in normal Western clothes?
And, as I always say, what are cultural norms in Morocco? Those of the old grannies in djellaba and a half-face veil from the nose downwards? Their daughters in kaftans and no veil and who might or might not have their heads covered and ears showing? Their grandchildren in jeans, leggings or short skirts with or without a scarf?
Is your argument that foreigners should adjust their dress for each destination on a tour?
