It's mentioned in that other thread, but i've just read 'Morocco that was' by Walter harris, while I've been travelling around Morocco for the last 4 weeks. Loved it. He was times correspondent from the 1890s through til 1930 something, saw some incredible changes, was involved in some incredible stories himself (exaggeration? no idea. loved it anyway) Very much of its time, and very pro colonial (he says some outrageous things about Moroccans too) and a few times what i was reading matched up with where I was in Morocco.

John i think Mogador Mon Amour talks only about Essaouira, not Morocco with it's culture and history, i like the one recommended by Shimmin.

This book is due out soon in a new version (I was fortunate to have a pre release copy) and absolutely captures the feel of Morocco. Could actually feel the red heat and the dust off the desert....! The Forgiven by Lawrence Osborne

To prepare you for the cultural differences I would recommend Hideous Kinky which was subsequently made into a film.

The daughter in the book is Esther Freud, daughter of famous portait painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud.
