Desert tour and back in four days

We are a family of four and during our trip to Morroco would like stay overnight in the desert. We will be in Marakesh for 3 nights, then have 4 nights/5 days before we must be in Kasbah du Toubal. would welcome a suggested itinerary to visit Erg Chiggaga. Happy to rent a car. Would like to break up the days so not too much driving on any given day. Would like to be in Kasbah by late morning of the 5th day.days

Thanks in advance for your help

1. Re: Desert tour and back in four days

Five days and four nights will be perfect, especially with a hire car which will give you the flexibility to visit places en route. Now all you need is a good map such as Reisse KnowHow (my favourite), see stanfords.co.uk/Home/Product-Detail/Morocco_… or Michelin 742 (paper and easily torn), see stanfords.co.uk/Home/Product-Detail/Morocco_…

The hardest part of the whole trip is getting out of Marrakech whilst you are still learning Moroccan driving, but take it easy and you'll be OK. The second hardest part for those unused to the Alps or other mountains is crossing the High Atlas between Marrakech and Ouarzazate which will take as much as five hours. So treat this bit as an alpine tour and take things easy.

What I would recommend is...

(1) Marrakech - Tizi n'Tichka (pass) - then turn sharp left for Telouet - Glaoui Kasbah (worth visit), new road south to Ait Benhaddou where there's lots of hotel options. Some pics (taken in reverse direction to you) at morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

and morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

(2) Ait Benhaddou - Ouarzazate - Tinerhir - Erfoud (via R702) - Merzouga (overnight)

(3) Leisurely start - Merzouga - Tinerhir - Todra Gorge (overnight at Auberge Le Festival). Pics at morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

(4) Auberge le Festival - Tinerhir - Boumalne - Dades Gorge to M'semrir, then return - El Kelaa m'Gouna (turn north in El Kelaa for 8km and overnight at Kasbah Itran). Pics at morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

and morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

(5) Kasbah Itran - Skoura Oasis (maybe) - Ouarzazate - Tizi n'Tichka via main road - Marrakech. Pics at morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/…

Just noticed the 'would like to be in Kasbah Toubkal by late morning'. This won't be easy unless you overnight in Marrakech. However, coming back towards Marrakech you can turn left (south west) at Ait Ourir and cut across to Tahanaoute which will help a bit.

Some pics of Kasbah Toubkal on posts #12 and 13 at morocco-knowledgebase.net/forum/… The photos of the kasbah from above are particularly impressive.

Hi Tim, hhuge thanks for the quick and comprehensive response. I haven't gone through all yuour links etc yet, but did notice you have suggested going to Erg Chebbi, whereas I had assumed overnight desert trip in Erg Chigaga. What do you think? That way we could loop back via Tazenakht and Aoulouz etc. If you have the time would appreciate any suggestions. Regards

Sorry, I missed that bit.

OK, day 1 the same. Day 2 drive to M'hamid. The main erg is 40km west of M'hamid (nearer ones are low and not at all impressive), so you'll need to research who to do an overnight bivouac with.

Day 3 head north to Agdz (pronounced Ag-dez) then cut west on the R108 (very fast tarmac) to Tazenakht. Overnight possibly at Taliouine (Auberge Souktana or others) which is the centre of the saffron production area.

Day 4: keep heading west then north over the Tizi n'Test.

You can't cut across to Foum Zguid unless you are in a 4WD and know how to drive one in sand.

5. Re: Desert tour and back in four days

Once again many thanks. Your help has been invaluable. Our plan based on your ideas looks like being:

Day 1 - To Ait Benhaddou -overnight there

Day 2 - to M'hamid - overnight in desert

Day 3 - to Adgz - overnight there

Day 4 - to Talioune - overnight there

Day 5 - to Imil via Tizi n'Test

Can't wait till Easter!

7. Re: Desert tour and back in four days

I am afraid it will be much stress, it take the whole day from Ait BenHaddou to M'Hamid. Then you have to go by 4x4 to Erg Chigaga, it take about 2 hours. It will be dark. And next morning you want to continue your trip to Agdz etc.

Stay 2 days in Erg Chigaga and try to rework your itinerary..

In Imlil Kasbah Toubkal is an amazing location to stay in as Tim has suggested it's really worth it.
