I did 'get' Marrakech. It just isn't very nice.

Travellers should be aware that negative opinions of Marrakech aren't welcome on this forum. I've witnessed it many times, if someone says a negative thing, they're made out to be too idiotic to have understood the culture.

I 'got' the culture. The culture is largely one of deceit and bleeding tourists of money by any means necessary. I've never felt so unsafe in an area before in my life. I saw a man getting beaten with a chair, and police stood by ignoring it. Every corner has young men and children waiting to jump on tourists to try and get money, by pretending to be from restaurants, wanting to show directions to an imaginary market or just to outright intimidate you. 'Culture' isn't an excuse for liars and cheats.

The defenders will say I didn't get it, I did something wrong, or that I'm in the minority. Reading opinions outside this forum, I know I'm not.

Marrakech has its charms, and it's worth going to experience something different, but be cautious of this forum, it's best to also look elsewhere for a less bias perspective.

Its actually quite funny to read the constant defending of marrakech by a couple of people on this forum... Cant you just accept that this happens and its not very pleasant . I live in london and what people say about certain areas are TRUE !!! I love my home town but do notdefend it when certain things clearly happen ... I think stop defending marrakech with excuse after excuse about how the things work , im sorry but as some one explained in a post sbout the signaling to others, what a surprise i too experienced it and im pretty sure it wasnt to be led to a shop ... Soi aswell got out of that situation...

And also to keep giving your "advice" about walk away , dont reply .. Etc etc ...

It doesnt work they keep harrassing you untill you literaly forcefully tell them to go away ..

This is for people to read and make there own minds up whether it be for research before they go to marrakech etc. my experience was awful i cant wait to go home so i hope what i have said is helpful to any1 that wants a truthfull experience

One more thing, whoever said im getting "culture" mixed up with this stuff is wrong..... "Culture" is surely the vibe of a place , the way the people live and the experience that surrounds it. So in my EXPERIENCE of marrakech everything that i have said is the "CULTURE"

Canadian Monster - 20 to 30 dirhams is a large over-payment even if you had asked for the service. Once they see you giving large over-payments they think that they can easily get more money from you and so they try it on.

If tourists didn't hand over their money for nothing then the situation would be better for all of us. I am not being accusatory towards you (or anyone else that has been disappointed with the hassle), I'm just trying to explain the situation from my perspective.

I do get people asking me for money in the street. I do get people offering to 'help' me in the street. I don't pay any attention to them. I don't give them money and I continue doing what I need to do.

Clearly you're not happy with your experience. Which given that many other visitors don't have problems I can only think is down to one of two factors.

Different understanding of situations:—two people both experiencing the same thing might view them and relate them completely. For example, if you hear the 'almost screaming' Darija of two Moroccans engaged in conversation some might think they are about to murder each other, whereas the reality is that it's an animated discussion between friends in a gutteral language with lots of waving of hands.

Different experiences due to body language:—I see touts eyeing me up to decide whether to approach me and can put many off by being purposeful in where I'm going. If I am approached I give a small negative wave and keep going. My whole attitude is 'don't bother me.' Works about 90% of the time. Some persist but I show total disinterest, respond in an absent minded, distracted and unhelpful way, reject any offers, never add 'thank you' to a 'NO'. Keep it up, they go after an easier target (probably you, LOL).

Only once have I had to use the "I'm taking a photo of you to complain to the police" method of getting rid of the hanger on. All I can say is that it used to be a lot worse before the Tourist Police were formed.

Never ever give out money just because some chancer asks for some. It's like trying to put out flames by dousing in petrol.

Best treat all of this as some form of a game, as in 'Your mission, should you accept this challenge, is to get from your hotel to the souqs without any money.' Don't get angry with people, stay light hearted. Nobody is about to hurt you or murder you. You're on holiday, have a good time.

John , I think you are wrong when you insist only 0.01 % of the people in morocco hassle you! . I would put it at nearer 20 % of the people on the streets hassle you and 2 % are a nightmare and very rude and aggressive . Be honest and get real , you live there , so you know the reality , as much as you will not accept the unpleasant truth .
