Gate 1 Affordable Morocco Tour

Our family has just returned from Gate 1 Affordable Morocco Tour. This was our first tour with Gate 1 and it will not be our last. We are a family of 4 (15 & 13 year old girls) and this was our first real guided tour (we took Smartours to S. Africa last year, but did everything on our own except transfers and 1 day safari).

We loved our time in Morocco, our guide and our tour group. The tour is very well organized and very fast paced. This tour is not for a leisurely time around Morocco. There is a lot of travel involved to see the cities visited on the tour. The hotels ranged from good to average.

Khalid our tour guide was very attentive and knowledgeable about his country. Our family missed the included 1/2 day tour of Marrakech because we went on a balloon ride (before the Egypt disaster); Khalid helped us arrange a tour guide (we were going to arrange on our own). The tour guide he arranged for us was top notch. He went out of his way to help everyone on our trip. There was a request for a camel ride so he arranged camels rides for anyone who wanted one.

We learned so much on our trip; much more than when we travel on our own.

I was also concerned about going to Morocco with everything that is going on in N. Africa. I felt completely safe in Morocco and the people were very kind. At no point, did I feel in danger.

I would not hesitate booking another Gate 1 tour, in fact if I can find one that works around school vacation weeks I will.

I did not know that. The reason I posted this is that I have seen many questions in multiple forums about this company and it is difficult to get unbiased views on different companies. I guess I don't know the difference with posting a "review" here vs the "things to do section".

I don't know if you're still around or what snarky comments you got, but I'm thinking about this tour and appreciate your comments.

How often did you stop to shop? That is my greatest pet peeve about escorted tours. Thanks!

Sorry it is taking so long to respond; I was in China. There we no real stops for shopping except for the day in Fez. If you choose the optional tour of Fez (which we did), there is a stop at a carpet store and a pottery factory. We did not go with the tour group to the 1/2 day tour in Marrakech; so I cannot speak to that day. We opted as a family to go on a hot air balloon ride and then the guide arranged a guide we paid to take us on a 1/2 tour of Marrakech. it is a very fast paced trip, so there is not a lot of time for shopping. Hope this helps. Have fun - we loved Morocco.

I know that I'm replying to old queries, but when I was looking for info about Gate 1 Moroccan tours, I wish I had found more information from posters who had only 1-3 posts, and their posts were brimming with praise.

I recently returned from the 13 day Kaleidoscope tour of Morocco; I loved Morocco, think the tour was a very good value (esp as it was "on sale" through Travelzoo) and I found that I had been very wrong about being disdainful of large tour group travel.

I'm not sure how different the Affordable Morocco Tour is from the Kaleidoscope tour, but I think we did do too many stops for shopping. The coach, understandably, stops in large rest areas; those stops are about using the toilets, getting something to drink or nosh, and looking at the souvenirs.

As part of the tour, we were taken to a carpet shop, leather shop, brass shop, rosewater shop, weaving/fabric shop, herb shop and argan oil shop. I came to enjoy these sell-stops as consumer theater, and came to appreciate the theatrical skills of the salespeople. The few female sales people we met were pretty much the only opportunity to meet and talk with working Moroccan women.

My sister & I (she's 56; I'm 66) traveled with Gate 1 on their "8 Day Affordable Morocco" tour in May, 2014. We were pleased with our tour & our knowledgeable guide, Khalid, who shepherded us through his country with helpfulness, kindness, & a sense of humor. Despite being experienced travelers, who have both lived in the Developing World, we learned a lot & saw sites we probably wouldn't have visited on our own. There were several, high-energy, young professionals in our group who were taking a week off work for this tour - a great way to get a quick overview of Morocco. There were also some solo travelers who said they were enjoying their trip. Gate 1 literature states this is a "comprehensive, fast-paced tour (that) takes you across the Kingdom of Morocco." So this is not a tour for people who need assistance w their physical challenges or want a leisurely trip. Some meals were on our own, something we liked. To enhance our visit, my sister & I went early & stayed late on our own in riads. With the help of our Fez hotel, we also left Gate 1 for a short, half-day tour of the medina with a paid, female guide, but she devoted too much time explaining her religion. Gate 1 often visits a local school, but we didn't on this trip. A former teacher, I was disappointed, although I understand not everyone enjoys these visits, especially if time is limited. I was told by someone not associated with Gate 1 that the Moroccan government doesn't permit school visits, something for me to confirm. My husband & I have (also) traveled with Gate 1 (India, Peru) & we will do so again to Ecuador, although we will pay extra to arrive 3 days early.
