Napali Cruise Suitable for young kids? |
|
We're heading to Kauai for 10 days in about 3 weeks with 4 1/2 and 2 year old kids. There are several companies that will allow kids as young as 2 year old on the Napali cruises. Anyone with experiences on these cruises with kids as young as ours? |
|
I would say it will depend on the weather as during the summer the north is suppose to be quite calm however there are storms around. Check on the national weatherservice or weather underground both have long and short range forecasts.

The water can be surprising choppy as you are on the open Pacific ocean. We went on a fairly big boat with about 50 to 60 people. One woman got sick within minutes of leaving the dock, my daughter felt queasy at times, but the scenery is spectacular. Ask your pediatrician if Dramamine is OK for kids this young. My kids were 7 and 11 when we went. The boat we went on did have a lot of room to move about and you leave your shoes on the dock. But your kids might be too young to appreciate it and ruin it for you, having to worry about their whereabouts constantly. I hate to say it, but if they're girls I'd say maybe, but boys probably not a good idea. How about using the sitters or kids' club wherever you're staying and enjoying the trip with your spouse?

We did a NaPali cruise when my boys were 3 & 5. I think it was Captain Andy's out of the south side and it was in July. The water was rough....didn't bother us but a couple of people were heaving over the side of the boat the whole way. Try to get on the boat that is a "boat" boat (power catamaran) and not a Sailboat boat (know what I mean?). These give more room to move around and MUCH less chance of a kid going overboard. Also, DON'T do a trip that includes a stop to snorkel because the water will be too deep and scary for the kids, and when the boat comes to a stop kids get bored and seasick very quickly. We did the sunset cruise and it was a little on the long side for the kids even though it was the shortest sail. The scenery is very nice, but you know kids and scenery.......! Honestly, we probably could have skipped it, and I haven't bothered on any subsequent trips. If you want to see the Na Pali coast, you might want to just drive to the Kalalau Valley lookout at Waimea or hike part of the Kalalau Trail.

Check out Liko's. They leave from the small boat harbor on the west side and use a big power cat. They also do a great job with families with kids.

I would second the Liko's tour. We experienced the Napali coast with them in April. Several children did become quite ill and the crew were just wonderful with them. I was impressed. As stated before, preparation is the key to an enjoyable experience. I was so surprised at the parents who probably put months of thought into a Hawaiian vacation and no thought into what a boat on the Pacific may do to the stomach of a child. No matter how many boats you have been on-be prepared!

I would not take kids that age. Doubtful they would enjoy it and they will need constant watching even on a cat. which means less pleasure for you. I second idea find a sitter for a day. Trip is worth it for adult and older kids. We took young ones on a kayak on Wailua, not quite that young, but they enjoyed it Boogey boarding at Poipu the 4 year old would enjoy.

we were there with 5 grandkids and their parents. we were convenient baby sitting service on a couple of days. which was great with us. we could train them in our ways?? hah

Oh, just want to add, LIKO's offices are up in waimea, and the boat leaves out Kikiaola small boat harbor..... You check-in in wiamea, and then drive the short distance to the harbor. Denny

Wach: Have to agree that 2 yr olds on a Napali trip might not be a real good idea. 7 or above would be in the ok category. You are definitely out on the OCEAN for 4 or 5 hours....and with 2 and 4 year olds....well.....not a good plan. Denny

The children on our Liko trip were no younger than I'd say 6. They were a bit restless, so you know one of the parents did not have the best experience and enjoy the trip. It is also very bouncy and noisy ride, a multisensory experience. Even if they do not get sick, it may frighten them. The ones that got sick were older and as I stated previously, were treated so well by the crew. I felt bad for the little kids since they were acting appropriate to the experience, but were treated as though they had done something wrong. Punished for not fitting into an adult agenda. What a nice memory....
