Snorkel in June |
|
Following other post about snorkel in winter. How about in June? We have booked into Poipu in late June, wanted to find time our teen granddaughter and her parents could join us. getting hard for her to miss school This will be our 5th time to Kauai, but we usually go in Oregon's winter season. Anyway where to snorkel in June, or does it matter? How are the Na Pali coast boat cruises in June. last time we were there was in Oct and got pretty choppy by time we headed back. Daughter and gr-daughter both tend to get motion sickness. I know I would not have suggested they take the afternoon cruise that day. They were with us on Kauai at Poipu 6 or so years ago in Nov. so 2nd time for them. |

Last time we went to Kauai it was in the month of May. Snorkeling was good. You should have no problems in June. Bill

Though the Northshore is the place to be in June for snorkeling - the Northshore is about as flat as a pancake then . . . Ke'e, Tunnels, Hideaway, Annini are all good places to snorkel . . . Ke'e is our favorite simply because of the bathrooms, etc. and the incredible beauty you are surrounded by. The south shore will be rougher - more waves and such, which would be fine for surfing/boogie boarding, but probably not snorkeling, though you may have a calm day or so. Plan to head north. :)

North Shore-June= awesome snorkeling. The Na Pali tours out of Hanalei start back up in May. Other tours of the coast go out of Pt Allen.

This last June we went up to Tunnels a couple of times and it was great. The drive was not the greatest but worth it. We were literally right across the street from Lawai beach but it was blown out the entire time as was Poipu and Salt Pond. We didn't get time to do Lydgate but we will this June since we'll be right down the road this June. Here is a link to our pics from Tunnels

>>>The drive was not the greatest but worth it.>>>> Why did you say the drive was not the greatest? Too long? It is a gorgeous drive to the NS which is why many people who stay in Poipu do it frequently to see this lush, tropical region of Kauai, especially during the summer when the ocean conditions are calm and snorkeling perfect.

Yes it's just the length of the drive. I agree the drive is very beautiful but to get to Tunnels to get a decent parking spot and avoid the traffic in the East it's an early morning. We will be a bit closer this trip and I'm sure sometime we will probably just stay in the North if we can ever get an exchange up there. But for now I will just enjoy the drive.

As others have mentioned, the north shore beaches will be your best bets for snorkeling in June. Our favorites are Hideaways, Tunnels, Sealodge, Kepuhi and Ke'e. Hideaways and Sealodge require a hike down a steep trail, but they will be much less crowded than Tunnels or Ke'e. Snorkeling at Sealodge is only good at high tide since it is very shallow near the shore. IMO Kepuhi is way underrated for snorkeling and it is usually nearly deserted. The only drawback there is the lack of shade and it seems like it's often windy there. I can highly recommend the Na Pali Catamaran boat tour that leaves from Hanalei. Try to get on the morning tour since seas will generally be calmer. They book up well in advance so you'll need to make reservations at least a month in advance.

i know the original poster asked about snorkeling in June, but i will be in kauai in late april - would you all still reccomend the same beaching for that time of the year? Thanks!
|
Late April is what I would call a transitional time. Some of those beaches might be fine, but you would want to check the conditions on line first. Closer to the end of May the ocean conditions really calm down. In April you need to check daily.
