Puhi bypass |
|
Just wondering if they ever put a light where the Puhi bypass is across from the Humane Society? We always use that road and always thought a light would be great when you are coming back to Poipu that way - takes forever to make that left turn. Can you tell I am getting excited about our May trip! Daughter and me - how great can that get! |

Aloha from Kaua'i! No light at the Puhi by-pass across from the Humane Society - no plans for it as far as I know. Malama Pono, Janet

<<No light at the Puhi by-pass across from the Humane Society - no plans for it as far as I know. That's too bad - guess we will just have to stop and smell the plumeria while we wait for traffic to clear.

No, it's better without a light. The bypasses are not meant for people to cut around traffic. They were originally created to have alternate escape routes out of the major population areas or just in case a road is blocked for long periods by an accident. If there were a light, it would back up traffic even more on the highway, just when it can finally start flowing. A lot of people use the bypasses as shortcuts, but even without a light, you just end up slowing everybody down when someone is still nice enough to let you back in.

<<A lot of people use the bypasses as shortcuts, but even without a light, you just end up slowing everybody down when someone is still nice enough to let you back in.>> Thanks Kauaihiker - good explanation and yes we do use it for a shortcut plus just the relaxed pleasurable ride through the countryside

We also use the puhi by-pass, coming from poipu or the west side. Agee 100% with how pleasurable it is to drive back down to the harbor area. Lush and green, with the ha'upu mountains in the back ground. Seldom , if ever, use it going toward poipu or the west side, due to the traffic trying to turn left back on the the coastal hwy. If we are returning back to Banyon Harbor at night, we find the traffic on the main hwy not much of a problem, and stay on that until nawiliwili road. Turns out quicker. Just a fun story. After first moving over, I worked at Brenneckes in poipu, and was having training on a night shift. We lived in puhi, and about 8:30 I turned on to the puhi bypass. Two or three minutes later, the road was covered in cane toads. Hundreds, and hundreds of them. It was amazing. I figured this happened every night, so the next evening, I drove Erica up there. Nada, road was bare....we see a couple or so every once in a while, and Erica looks as me with great skepticism (sp) when I mention the great hoard of the killer toads. Denny

The toads are killer only if you lick them. Actually, that would only make you sick, but it can kill a dog. Was it a full or new moon by any chance?

<<The toads are killer only if you lick them>> Ok that was a good one - now on any given night take a flashlight and walk to the Hyatt from the Pointe at Poipu - you will be amazed at the frogs you see - shine the flashlight on the grass towards the ocean from the pathway! LOTS AND LOTS of frogs! Favorite past time in the evenings :)

Had a similar experience on the Puhi bypass road late one night. The pavement was covered, literally covered, with the toads. I was gingerly driving about 5 mph so as to not splatter up my car. I have NO idea how many I drove over vs. how many hopped away. It was like one of those B-rated creature flicks where they're cautiously walking thru a herd of sleeping creatures so as not to awake them. I haven't seen this on the Puhi Bypass road since that night. and I've driven it many times since then.

Napa... Thank you, thank you....when ever I tell that tale, people just look at me, with that..." oh yeah, what had you been drinking, expression !" Erica still doesnt beleive me....so now you are living proof....we are vindicated ! Denny

Yes, Denny. We ARE vindicated. I've taken family members on that road since then and have not seen it since. I'm trying to remember what the weather conditions had been like but can't. I do know it was evening, fairly late, around 10 pm.
