Kauai in January - Recommendations please |
|
My husband and I will be visiting Kauai in January for the first time. We plan to snorkel, hike, and sightsee. We are looking for a bed and breakfast with beautiful views of the beach where we can sit and enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day. After doing a lot of research it sounds like the south shore, near Poipu, would have the best weather that time of year. Can anyone recommend a place to stay? Is the Poipu area our best bet? Is 5-7 days a good amount of time to stay in this area? Any restaurant recommendations? Thanks for all your help. Tripadvisor is the greatest. |

Po`ipu is definitely your best bet in January. 5-7 days is great for a first time. (You'll probably want more by the end.) :0

I don't know a lot of Bed and Breakfasts in Poipu with views of the beach ( I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I just don't know of any), but don't discount a condo like Kuhio Shores. If you want to wake you to a beautiful sunrise, with whales and turtles out your lanai, this is the place. Also look at Sunset Kahili and Poipu Kapili. Poipu weather in January is usually good and restaurant suggestions are all over this forum. Just put restaurants in the search box. Right next door to KS is Beach House, a favorite of many. Have a great time.

The two B & B's in Poipu have closed. Gloria and Bob ("Gloria's") retired and I'm not sure what happened to "Poipu B&B" near Waikomo Streams. As "jebett" mentioned, I would also recommend a condo. You can have your chilled bottle of wine waiting for you! Kuhio Shores has some great condos and I personally love the location. I assume you need a one bedroom and they have plenty to choose from. We usually stay in a house just across the bay from Kuhio Shores and I love the location. You can also look at other ocean front condos in Poipu like Poipu Palms, Poipu Makai, Sunset Makai, Makuehena. A lot of these condos have been upgraded to beautiful interiors recently.

We did not stay in a bed and breakfast, but we always had a great condo in poipu kai. We enjoyed bbqing some tasty steak, or fish, and having a glass of wine while cooking. Meals were easy as they are each evening now as residents. One main course and a salad..simple and tasty in a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere. We would have a very nice dinner at the condo, on the lanai, sipping our wine, and just enjoy talking over the days adventures, and the marvelous attributes of kauai and the people that we met. We still have an affinity for poipu kai, and drive past, or even walk thru once in a while on our hikes on the south shore. Always great memories. We still strongly believe that we make our own good time, and were always 100% pleased with everything, on each and everyone of our visits. Really do not think you will have problem after researching places to stay, many have been posted on this board, some just a few days ago for the poipu area. As far as breakfast, yes we would make our own, starting out with papayas, and then whatever each of us wanted. We would relax in the peacefulness of the morning, usually after a hike along the dunes and cliffs trail, or sometimes working out at the extreme fitness gym in port allen. For us, perfect way to begin the day, and then head off for the planned adventures. Anyway, that is how we did it, and just taylored our visits to what we both enjoyed and fit our life styles. Same for others who come and visit, just do what feels good to both of you and you will share marvelous garden island visits. Do it your way, what ever that might be. Denny

Aloha from Kaua'i! There are a few places down in the Po'ipu Beach Park area that would be considered B+B's - here are links to a couple of them: http://www.bedandbreakfastkauai.com/ http://www.poipubeach.com/bedandbreakfast.htm This last one is run by friends of ours - it is a beautiful 2 story home with its own studio apartment downstairs - private entry and 1/2 block walk to the ocean. There is another rental upstairs as well. Absolutely immaculate - beautifully decorated. Debbie and Jim do a fantastic job! Po'ipu Inn Bed and Breakfast was purchased by the Koloa Landing Development - it will be used (along with Koloa Landing Cottages next door) for their workers once the big construction starts on that project. Thanks, Janet! We stayed at Poipu Plantation House (in their 2 bedroom condo) in 1998 and I forgot that they are also a B&B.

Thanks for all the advice. Koloagirl, I wrote to your friends, but I didn't hear back. There place sounded great. We're now leaning towards Kuhio Shores. Are there special units we should look at? What about 213? Can I tell from the number which way it faces.
|
Kuhio Shores: The higher numbers face the ocean and the lower numbers are closer to Lawai Road. The first number is the floor. So #213 would be pretty much in the middle of the building, closer to the corner, facing the ocean on the 2nd floor. My friends stay in #107 which is ground floor, close to the corner but facing the bay. Here is a nice link to see the locations of the different condos:
